Insalata's — Restaurant in San Anselmo

My wife loves this place and I have to admit it's pretty good. The food we've tried is delicious, and there're a lot more selections we look forward to trying. When I first got the menu, I didn't see coffee listed as a beverage, but the have some very delicious coffee and selection of skim, regular, and half-half to add. My hamburger was just right at medium rare and the toppings were so high I could barely get it into my mouth. My wife enjoyed the middle eastern inspired vegetarian platter so much she ordered it again. It's a large platter with all kinds of ingredients: lemony lentils, curried spinach, Japanese eggplant, tomato-pistachio relish, Turkish yogurt, and couscous. I took a taste and agreed with her - delicious! I admired all the selections in the deli case. There is a large variety ready to go, or order in advance and pick up. We are considering ordering for a party. We were there early enough to get very comfortable booth seating, which was nice. Parking is somewhat limited if the restaurant is busy; we were there for lunch and there were still a few spots left in the lot. I have now been here 6 times. Order the steak wagyu if you read nothing else.

Big, spacious, CLEAN, perfectly lit, restaurant. I don’t like to feel overwhelmed or to close to people, so for me that is important and I am Italian and Greek so being very clean, is also important to me.

The service, I had Felix this time, he was fantastic but on service I always get someone amazing.

Truthfully, first time I came here the main chef “Charlie” I think was working food was incredible. There were a couple times I thought okay but not like the first time. Clearly good enough to continue to go back.

Holy f balls tonight!!! Back to why I love this place. I will say the main chef whether his name is Charlie or not I actually don’t know but he was there. The food was perfect. Lamb chops, hummus, feta dip and pita, chili oils, wagyu steaks, rigatoni with Dungeness crab served at a randomly colder perfect temperature since it had fresh cold crab on it.

Well, this is going to be a mixed review because the food is incredible but the service and seating is poor.

First the good: There were 3 of us and we started with the Hummus and the Eggplant fries, which are a must have. For mains, we went the diver scallops, the pan roasted salmon and the Mediterranean platter. Everything was superbly prepared and tasted wonderful. By the way, we started out with Manhattans, even better than the ones I pour at home, which are pretty good.

Now for the bad: The back room seating area is cramped and some of the tables are up placed close to cabinets and other tables. Our table was near one of the cabinets, a cabinet the floor staff needs to access throughout the evening. Each time the staff went to the cabinet they would smack the cabinet door against our chairs. We finally had to instruct the staff not to smack our table. I wouldn't say we were nice about it, but then again I would think management would teach the staff that hitting the customer's tables...
