What can I say about San Antonio food in a nutshell, its generally bland, super highly rated restaurants that don't deserve much of a review. Although I hate being callous when it comes to ratings in San Antonio, my experience at Kogi was far from a good one.
I had the bibimbap in a hot stone pot, 16 wings, and an orange chicken to try a little bit of everything on the menu.
First off, the hot stone pot came out warm at best and was mostly filled with lettuce (not indicated on menu) and spinach, very little of anything else they said was on the recipe, and very bland, something I would normally believe gochujang would enhance.
Secondly, I was told the wings would be twice fried and I was very excited, these were my favourite things to eat while in korea and its really hard to find anywhere that sells them in Texas, so I was super disappointed when it came out once fried with a very basic sauce that tasted like a store bought teriyaki with some peppers, I only finished 4 wings before taking it home hoping they will be better at work. The fries were the only good part, and I definitely never like fries.
Lastly, the orange chicken was again, essentially a basic store bought sauce with chicken nuggets and a side of rice
All in all, I don't understand how any of the other reviews actually rate this place anywhere near a 5, sounds more like a quick choice than an actual thought, but I hope this place steps up their game, I definitely DO NOT recommend this...
Read moreI’ve been so fed up with the new staff working here. We should’ve stopped going a long time ago. We use to be regulars and go on literally a daily basis. I cherish Korean food this isn’t authentic by all means but it’ll do until I see my mother in law in December. The wait staff was pretty decent since it’s extremely slow during the week. But the past few times we’ve gone the server tall white skinny male is super rude. He huffs and puffs before seating us and takes forever even taking our order. Once we were turned away and told he was only doing to go orders. He’s no pleasant nor is he kind at all. Second waiter I’m going in on is a young black man that works there with glasses. He’s blasting music loud as hell keep in mind this restaurant is dead like there’s no people besides maybe one other table when we go in. He’s dancing and not really attentive not as bad as the white dude but still. The third one we just had a few days ago a heavy set white girl. She never came to our table to refill drinks or ask if we wanted to order anything else. Instead she was drawing on herself with sharpie and the young black male blasted rap music. She was being so loud with him I could hear her entire conversation. We will never step foot in this...
Read moreService was sub par. The young server wasn't very attentive and never offered us a second drink (really missed an opportunity to grow our check). My 3 stars are only based on the food and restaurant, however. I have never been to a korean place that doesnt serve soju by itself. Not being able to mix my soju with my cass seems fundamentally not korean. They had a list of flavored soju cocktails but were out of all these soju (ordering mistake?). The banchan is also questionable. If you order an entree you are offered to choose 3 of the possible 8 or 9 items as side dishes. I went with a friend and we strategically got different ones to share, but they serve all the banchan on the plate of food you ordered, like a western entree. It made sharing a bit more cumbersome and less authentic. Being stingy with banchan is not a good sign. I had the galbi which was tasty but the quality of beef was not very good. I had some stringy connective tissue in most bites. TLDR; Overall I think I would like to return and give them another go as I did enjoy the flavors, but I was disappointed in my service as well as the lack of typical korean elements such as soju and normal generosity...
