I'm saddened to say that my last visit to this restaurant was today. I was first witness of clandestine tipping practices being high priority at this establishment as I overheard the host, 'Johnny Dang' complaining about not getting tips to another customer after I had not tipped them for my take-out order. I could see frustration would be expressed for me sitting down to dine and not tipping for ACTUAL service, but all he did was greet me at the entrance and charged me for the meal. Knowing the fact that I've contributed towards paying wages and tipped very well here in the past eating with family here at this location. Then, as I waited at least half an hour for my food (willing to bet that was retailiation for not tipping) that I had noticed 5 dollars extra on top of the purchase to my order was charged on my card. I showed him the evidence on my receipt and the text notification of the purchase amount not matching. I had asked to speak with the manager on duty, yet never made an appearance. I guess they were too busy or not caring enough to bother. Host even questioned me like I was lying. $28 dollars was the charge and the bank text notification showed me $33 and that's when I knew something wasn't right. I gave him a chance to explain this issue, but I'm afraid that my suspicion was correct in learning that he felt entitled to tip himself extra money on my card without my acknowledgement, and nothing is stated on the receipt about mandatory gratuity. Please steer clear of this business if you aren't in agreement with these shady dealings. Most people are probably not aware that this is happening, and are walking away with extra money being charged on their card until it's too late. Please be vigilant! Greed, shrink-flation (given less product) and inflation on top of everything is rampant. He was secretly betting that I wasn't going to pay attention, it's atrocious to treat your...
Read moreUpdate (11/9/2018): dropped rating from 5 stars to 2 stars. Twice in the past 3 weeks we have ordered lo mein and a chicken dish to-go and the meat has tasted bad. Both times, my husband got there long before the food was ready to take, so there is no excuse that we took too long to pick it up. The first time it happened, it was only the sesame chicken that tasted old and yucky and the lo mein chicken was fine. This time, it was bad enough that I never want to go back. The General Joe's chicken tasted as tho it had been reheated 3 or 4 times, or was too old AND the lo mein chicken tasted so bad and old that I almost gagged. And I am 100% sure it had been microwaved at the restaurant because there was a huge chunk of grisly chicken that had hot and cold spots. I thought maybe I was just being sensitive, and then my husband had a nibble and spit it out right away and said that the chicken was rotten.
I will never order from this place again unless someone else braves it and promises me the chicken isnt rotten. And then I will never order to go food from there because I dont want to get home only to find my food is poisoned with rotten chicken.
--Old Review from 4 months ago-- Best place to eat Chinese food in San Antonio! Lo mein is delicious, the meat is WAYYYY more fresh compared to the other Chinese restaurants. The sesame chicken is also amazing. Service is great. There's almost never a wait, but I definitely wouldn't mind waiting...
Read moreJust nope yourself out of this one. There is one in Selma that is/was far better than this location. DeZavala A Dong seems like it survives on luck or banquets/catering. My party of 2 visited on a Saturday for late lunch leaving at 3:30pm. When we arrived there was only one other table of 2 in the restaurant, they left and one more table of 2 arrived before we left. 3 front of house staff and I saw 2 kitchen staff.
To me the food is not terrible but it is bland. Inside is like a nice place that is going out of business. They have maybe 100 plastic totes, tables and chairs stacked in a hallway and one section of the restaurant which makes me think they do a lot of private events to survive. The main draw back was the place smelled like sewage, even being seated directly behind the greeting counter towards the front door, indicating a cleanliness or infrastructure problem.
I won't say the staff is rude but typical experience where they don't offer you anything, you have to flag them down for more drinks, an extra napkin, dropped silverware, etc. They forget to put in orders or put it in then don't have it but forget to let you know so you need to track it down. Place was late lunch time and quiet so it wasn't like there were a lot of...
