Dish- Massaman Curry (I get it Thai hot) and Thai Tea
A disclaimer before I start -Massaman curry (Shrimp) is my favorite Thai dish (mainly what this review is about) , followed by Pad Thai (Shrimp). So when I go to a Thai restaurant, all I focus on is those two dishes and Thai tea soI can’t speak about the other dishes. Unfortunately I don’t have a picture of the pad Thai.
Noppagao has CONSISTENTLY been putting out flavorful , delicious and hot dishes for me. I have finally found to be the best Massaman Curry in San Antone ! I love spicy food and when I get this dish Thai hot , it’s Thai hot. I always leave with a runny nose 😂 I’m a big guy and surprisingly I never get appetizers because this dish is more than enough. Pad Thai is also very good although the curry is my go to 😅 A cherry on top for me is that this place has great and REAL homemade Thai tea. Not that powdery shit. And FREE refills on it. Shiieee , you can’t beat that.
Two things I didn’t like happen but aren’t really a big deal is 1.) Twice , I was served slightly undercooked potatoes in the curry. Out of dozens of times I had this place …it’s no problem cause the flavor makes me see past it. 2.) Recently they have been serving already mixed Thai tea (usually its tea topped with half and half) and sometimes there might be too little or too much half and half. But again, its tastes great regardless so i look past it. This review might be too long but to finish up …this place is clean , has excellent service, serves amazing dishes and for $17, I always leave more than satisfied. Noppagao, my favorite Thai restaurant in the city and in my opinion, best Thai restaurant (based on two dishes...
Read moreNoppagao is my family of 5 plus my brother's favorite AUTHENTIC Thai restaurant in San Antonio (we drive past 4 others and have tried all 5). We came across this locally-owned and managed restaurant about 3 years ago. We highly recommend Noppagao. The food is always fresh, even the mango sticky rice. They have the black rice option, and it's cooked perfectly most of the time (very challenging to find a restaurant that consistently cooks black sticky rice well)! We get different dishes every time, as we enjoy them all. Salads are refreshing and delightful. Stir fry dishes have fresh veggies that aren't overcooked. Wonton soup has both chicken or pork options. Many dishes have vegetarian option. Sometimes, the restaurant is closed since the team is on vacation. They do post signs on the doors, and they try to give ample notice (at least 2-4 weeks). Very clean. Refreshing drinks! We love their lemongrass tea, Thai tea, and Thai coffee.
Very friendly and welcoming staff. Seating and service may be limited at times (max 2h seating limit), but they do their best to be quick and efficient (small knit team, all Thai).
They don't speak English primarily, so please be patient and try to help them understand what you want. Their drinks don't have boba options. Hot tea and soda are no free refills, but the iced tea, Thai Coffee/tea, and Lemongrass tea have free refills.
They close at 7:30pm eavery day (used to be 8pm), every Thursday, and the 2nd Wednesday of every March.
We always order something to go. Our bill before tips/gratuity is about $100-120 for 6-7 dishes and 1-3 drinks. The fish dishes are about $45 each; we haven't...
Read moreLet me tell you about a Thai restaurant that's not just good, it's a revelation. A hidden gem serving up the kind of street food that makes you feel like you've been transported to the bustling markets of Bangkok.
Of the many dishes we've enjoyed from their menu, let's focus on a few of the best.
Yum naem khao tod: Crunchy curried rice croquettes, sliver ginger’s spicy, fermented pork's umami, chilies' heat, mixing with green shallot, herbs, lime juice, fish sauce. Imagine crispy rice exploding with the tangy, savory magic of fermented pork. It's not just a dish; it's an awakening, a symphony of chaos. A culinary explosion. This is the anthem of the Thai food devotee.
Larb Kai: chopped stir fried chicken salad, a Thai/Lao perfection on a plate. Delicate, vibrant, savory and spicy, utterly addictive.
Nam Prik Kapi: The fermented fish sauce, crafted with exquisite care, tells a story with every bite. It's like nothing you've ever tasted. Pure, unadulterated magic.
Khao khluk kapi: This isn't just rice; it's a masterpiece. A symphony of flavors so authentic, it'll make you question every other Thai meal you've ever had. It's among the most authentic Thai experiences you'll find in San Antonio. One bite, and you'll be hooked. This is the kind of food that makes you want to tell everyone you know.
They do offer familiar Thai-Chinese dishes for the less adventurous. But it's the authentic treasures that will keep us, and any true food lover, coming back for more. San Antonio deserves more than just the same old...
