Went back for a 2nd dose, and it was quite enjoyable. I walked (a weekday early mid-morning) & found an empty booth that was a comfortable spot for me. I wiped the table with a napkin as there was some remaining evidence (water spots) of previous occupation. No big deal. I've had my shots.
As I sat down, the greeter met me at the table with a menu, eager to take my drink order. I smiled & said I already know what I want to order. She smiled and asked what I'd like. I asked for "half-&-half" sweet tea (half sweet, half unsweetened - most sweet tea tastes like candy to me), 1 carne guisada taco & 1 barbacoa taco, with extra pico de gallo. She clarified the pico de gallo on the side.
She returned with my tacos almost as quickly as my tea was ready. She brought a small side-bowl of pico, a squeeze condiment bottle of their red sauce and another of their green sauce. I like my tacos well sauced and fully flavored, so I piled on the pico then a line of both sauces.
The carne guisada had a good sauce, not too thick & just thin enough to make a delicious mess in my mustache. I lost count of the paper napkins I destroyed! Not only was the flavor and consistency delicious, on par with all the good taquerias in San Antonio, but the beef was also adequately tender with no chunks of gristle & a good chunk of meat in every bite - again, on par with the better taquerias in San Antonio.
The barbacoa taco was also very good. It was not greasy like some taquerias, and the flour tortilla was adequately stuffed. It came with a small pile of cilantro and another pile of onions. I love cilantro, and the pico was heavily balanced toward onions, so I piled on the cilantro then the pico & then a line of each sauce. There were no chunks of bone or strings of undigestible "parts" - overall a very good example of good quality barbacoa in San Antonio.
The tortillas were good like you would expect from an in-house taqueria ... after all, "taqueria" is in the name! Still, yummy!
The pico was heavily balanced toward onions. There were just enough tomatoes, peppers, & cilantro to take the sting off the onions, but their style of pico seems to be heavier on the onion than most I've had. Still, it was very good.
The green sauce seemed to have a bit more kick than anything else on the table. It was good, and I love a good kick. The red sauce was more flavorful, so they were a good balance.
Service was good, the wait staff was friendly, she inquired about more tea when I was barely halfway finished with it, so that was perfect. Based on my bill, I left a generous tip before I walked to the cashier to pay. They were quick, courteous, asked if everything was alright, slid a pen across the counter for me to sign the slip (I had my own pen), and thanked me for my business as I slid the signed slip back to him.
This is one of the many good neighborhood taquerias surrounding my home. This was my 2nd visit, but it...
Read morePlease do not come here!!! If I could rate it negative stars I would. I've been coming here for years with no issues but within the past year they have went down hill. My first problem was one time I went and ordered a empanada and after biting into it I saw it was full of mold! I brought this to their attention and they didn't care at all. Not even a offer to refund my money. But I said things happen and I went again. This time I went through drive thru and when I got home I began to eat my gordita and I felt something hard in my mouth. I thought oh it's probably just a bone. Nope it was a rusty used staple! And not a small one you use to staple papers. It was quite thick and large. My husband went back there and showed them the staple and the man said oh well I'm sorry there's nothing I can do for you.! He did not care, didn't feel bad that I almost ate a rusty staple. Didn't even offer to give refund!! He wanted the food back! He said no one else can help you no one else speaks English. Wow. I would advise you please do not go here!!! Don't dismiss this review because there are so many good reviews. I thought it was a good place too. You might not be so lucky if you go to have a good experience. This is my warning for y'all. This place is dirty too. Doesn't...
