Vegan food is definitely hard to perfect, however if you are willing to open a vegan restaurant, your menu should be at a level that is unmatched by home-cooks. The service was pretty awful as well, all around this establishment had no other qualities that went above and beyond expectation. The food was unremarkable and honestly terrible. However, if you feel the need to save the planet by eating a bland substitute you could’ve done at your house for less, that’s your choice.
Disclaimer: I went here during evening hours so they may change chefs/crews, which would explain why the reviews are so mixed, however I do not know if this is the case for such inconsistent reviews or just a matter of personal taste.
As a first time impression, I thought the restaurant itself was nicely decorated, we sat outside and it was a bit chilly. It took a while for a server to actually even place our drink orders, let alone get our food out. He was new so obviously he’s still learning, but if your waiter doesn’t even know the menu items then they need someone to shadow them, especially if all of your workers are just standing by the bar chatting.
Definitely order an appetizer, it takes them a long time to get food out, or don’t go to this restaurant.
The food came out in segments, my partner ordered the egg and sausage sandwich, however when he got it the top bun was completely torn, I thought that was very odd. The actual fake egg and meat tasted unpleasant, but to some it may curb their desire to eat meat.
I will say I really enjoyed the cheese fries, but they were completely drowned in the “cheese” sauce it came with.
Entree: I ordered the Buffalo chicken sandwich, however the Buffalo sauce tasted too vinegary and the combinations of flavors was just unappealing, the “chicken” tasted slightly sweet.
I also ordered the dragonfruit lemonade, it was very good! I liked it. All I needed was a shot in it. Maybe they should try getting their customers drunk and then have them order the food because it’s terrible. (Sorry, that’s a little messed up, but so is charging someone to eat this garbage).
I don’t know what else to say. It was just a bad experience. Maybe the food usually isn’t so terrible, but me and my three other friends also hated it, so there you go.
Hate to rag on small businesses, but really, you can’t afford to not have good quality food and service in the restaurant industry. (Especially with that...
Read moreWe came to San Antonio for a visit from Los Angeles and of course, we were looking for great vegan spots and Vegan Avenue was recommended to us a billion times so we had to swing by. Parking was fairly easy and decent to maneuver through, Customer Service was absolutely phenomenal and the Menu had so many great options to choose from, I wish I had many mouths to sample more items lol but there's always next time.
We ordered the breakfast club with fries, tres leches pancakes with blueberries & Strawberries, a sweet potato breakfast taco and fresh squeezed orange juice. The breakfast club 10/10 it was juicy, full of flavor, and the fries were amazing.. this was super delicious!! A must try. Tres leches pancakes 10/10 they were super fluffy, sweet and the fruit on top pairs really well with it. The sweet potato breakfast taco 10/10 the tortilla wasn't fried (which I liked), it was a warm shell, sweet potatoes were soft and they did not skimp on them at all and the soft tofu scramble was seasoned great. I'm not a sweet potato fan but this breakfast taco was amazing!! I truly enjoyed it, everything was awesome.
We sat off the main seating area and our waiter was very patient and genuinely friendly not the company's description of friendliness/politeness but he extended true southern hospitality that you can feel AND warms your heart. He was never overwhelming with checking in on us, he was a very very good waiter. Upon entering the restaurant we were welcomed with smiling faces and a collectively loud and hearty "welcome in". Our experience at Vegan Avenue was the best and we will definitely be back when we are in San Antonio again but if you're a native and want some delicious vegan eats, you have to try Vegan Avenue!! You can't go wrong and your tummy...
Read moreUpdated review: I have now come back multiple and even though my opinion on the taste hasn’t changed much, the price and portion is absolutely ridiculous. Everything is always pretty’s small, but today I had the birria quesadilla and that was the worst one. $15 for two small quesadillas on small tiny tortillas? It was laughable. On top of that, we order an omelette, and after 45 minutes of waiting they realized they didn’t have the just egg. 45 minutes. We just said we wanted nothing else, paid and left.
First time review: Incredible taste! Couldn’t tell it was vegan. We had the tres leches pancakes, carne asada fries and sweet potatoes taquitos. We also had the passion fruit and cucumber juices one.Everything was incredible. The portions are very large as well. Definitely want to come back to try the other options. Highly recommend.
Second visit: Even better than the first! This time we had the chicken Parm sandwich, cinnamon roll pancakes, and the stake and cheese omelette. The taste is incredible. The chicken Parm had a great ratio of chicken to tomatoes sauce and pesto. The portion was rather small for the price, but the sandwich was amazing. That combined with the sweet potatoes fries. The omelette was stellar! Again the portion was small, but the fillings was incredible. Great flavor profile and texture. Lastly, the pancakes were the best part of the meal! The portion this time was good, and the pancakes were amazing. Tasted like a true cinnamon roll, perfect way to end the brunch.
Overall, this is an amazing vegan restaurant with high quality, delicious meals. The portions are small, especially for the price, but if you don’t have a large appetite you will be very pleased. Or, you can do what we do an order multiple...
