Vegan Mob - Vegan BBQ and Soul Food — Restaurant in San Bruno

I really didn’t want my last experience to ruin this place for me but I went again last night. As it was still pretty early, 6pm I decided to order online again. Called a half hour later later to make sure they received my online order as they didn’t check the ordering system last time. Phone message stated to order online, that was frustrating. Once I get there the place is swamped. I noticed they had already made orders on the rack and wouldn’t call out the name or number. I seen a good five people go up to ask for their order and the guy behind the counter would grab the order from the rack. There were a lot of angry people when this happened. I noticed they were still calling online orders about five numbers away from mine in between a large handful of orders placed on site. A woman had expressed her frustration with me saying they’ve been there for over an hour already. I’m pretty sure she asked for a refund and left. I decided to go up to the window and ask about my order since it had been over an hour since I placed my order as well. There was a real sketchy dude being super rude to the customers and wouldn’t leave, mess to me and cutting me in line. When I was finally able to ask he said it would be another ten mins. It was about 25 mins later when they finally called my name. I was was waiting for nearly two hours. A couple in front of me mentioned they had one small order of fries that they waited for for over an hour as well, about 20 mins passed their quoted time. I guess the best time of day to go is as soon as they open. Just be mindful of time and prepare for a two hour long wait, no exaggeration.

The food is so great here. I’m not vegan but they have bomb fake meat and cheese. (Everything vegan I call fake lol) they’ve got some bomb nachos and even better lumpia 😭😭.

They are always super super busy so the last time I went I ordered online, waited my 45 mins as I was driving back home to the bay. I gave them a little extra time just in case as they haven’t called my name or number at the window. When I asked about my order they didn’t have it. It was an online order and apparently no one bothered to check the online ordering system for over an hour. That made me pretty mad. Needed to wait another 15 mins for my food. Still wasn’t ready. I was waiting for 30 mins at the mob, 45 mins after it was supposed to be ready. If I would have known this I wouldn’t have bothered to order online.

They are quite pricy so if you’re feeding a whole family be prepared to spend over 100 dollars. My last trip on four meals was...

I tried to order over the phone by calling while I was driving. They do not take orders over the phone and made me order thru a website. I then clicked their first option, which lead to a dead website. After 5 minutes from pulling over, I placed my order.

I arrived to the truck and as I’m approaching, there is a guy with glasses at the cash register. He glances at me, I reach the window, then he walks out the truck into the market next door, without a single acknowledgment to me.

I stand there for about 6 minutes until another man asks me for my order, and I receive it.

I ordered the Mob Plate with Brisket, Yams, Potato Salad, and Smackaronj $24 total

The potato salad was very decent with nice seasoning and texture, along with a nice potato taste along with onions. 7.5/10

The Smackaroni did not have any pull back to the “cheese”. It was more like a cheese sauce was applied. The flavor was decent though and still had a cheese type flavor. 4/10

The brisket had a mushy stringy like texture , sort of like meatloaf but deconstructed. The “BBQ” sauce tasted straight up like ketchup, and there is not a hit of brisket or BBQ taste at all in this protein. 1/10

The yams were very mushy and had no actual pieces/cubes of yam. The only big pieces there were stringy pieces of the yam, which were inedible. The flavor consisted heavy of honey, and not much of a yam or traditional candied yam flavor. 1/10

All in all, my experience at this place was not so worth it. For parking, there are 3 spaces available in the lot, and then some spots for filling gas. Other than that you are required street parking. The only part I enjoyed thoroughly was the Potato Salad. The first time I tried vegan mob was a door dash order from their lakeshore location and it was pretty terrible to the point of giving that one to two stars and took over 1.5 hours to even get the food. Last night I tried the location in San Bruno and shared my experience that happened a couple of weeks ago and was told that a chef was being retrained as our order had zero sauce and one of the proteins I was given literally looked like charred rehydrated soy curls and the chicken was like THICKKKKKK breaded tofu. The sides were good but the proteins were sad.

HOWEVER, this review is not a reflection of that because I wanted to try this again since I can’t go to Roscoe’s down in LA anymore since that isn’t vegan whatsoever! I ordered the barbequito and the combo plate.

The barbequito was sooooo good. I ate it in the parking lot waiting for the combo plate and it did not disappoint at all. All of the best bbq flavors in one rolled up beauty. Can’t wait to get it again. Mac, slaw, beans, brisket….fire! can’t even tell any of its vegan as it’s better than most soul food spots out there!

The combo plate this time is so much better than my first experience- the mob sauce/bbq sauce is actually there, the chicken doesn’t bite like a block of tofu….no tan looking charred soy curls this time around.

So happy I tried Vegan Mob again and went myself this time around. The sides are so good. I’m a sucker for good collard greens and these are just perfect and remind me of my favorite ones back in LA. The Mac is top notch and those bbq beans are absolute magic.

Thank you vegan mob for making me dance in the parking lot with the bangers playing and making this human very happy. Can’t wait to come back and bring friends who won’t know the difference between vegan...
