Let me preface this by saying the food at Baci is truly exceptional. From the perfectly al dente pasta to the rich and flavorful sauces, every dish we sampled was a delight. The service was equally impressive – our server was attentive, knowledgeable, and made excellent recommendations. Honestly, if it were just my wife and I, I'd be raving about this place and planning our next visit. The ambiance is lovely, and the overall experience felt like a real treat.
However, there's a significant issue that unfortunately overshadows the positive aspects: the exorbitant pricing for children's meals. I was utterly floored to see a charge of $28 per child for plain old buttered pasta. Yes, you read that right. They don't have a kids menu, understandably, so we ordered a plain old buttered pasta - linguine - nothing special. Fifty-six dollars for two simple plates of a tiny, for real tiny, portion of pasta for my two kids under 5. While the adult entrees were priced as expected for a restaurant of this caliber, this blatant overcharging for a basic children's dish which was the size we got is simply unacceptable.
It's a real shame because the quality of the adult food and the attentive service were genuinely outstanding. If you're a couple or dining without children, I wholeheartedly recommend Baci for a delicious and enjoyable Italian meal. You'll likely have a fantastic experience and feel it's worth the price.
However, if you have children, especially young ones with simpler palates, I strongly advise you to skip this establishment. The outrageous cost of the food for little kids makes it an unaffordable option for families, and frankly, it left a sour taste in my mouth that no amount of delicious pasta can wash away. Sadly, despite the excellent food and service, I won't be returning due to this blatant disregard for family-friendly pricing. It's a shame, but my wallet – and my kids –...
Read moreBaci is the unheralded Italian food gem of San Diego mainly due to it being located outside of Little Italy. But don't let its location fool you into believing that it doesn't belong. Moreover its location allows to find parking much easier than restaurants in Little Italy do.
First off, Baci is an classy older restaurant. It feels that way the instant you walk in the door as you are greeted by the host wearing a tux. The restaurant's atmosphere is warm and traditional. White linens are always clean and the tables feel ample.
Service is always impecable. Never have I had to flag someone down to refill water, or basics. Sometimes they get that part of the job done without me even noticing. Ordering food and the progression of the meal always feels natural and comfortable - no one rushes you, nor do the waiters seem to disappear.
Food is always always always incredible. I have never had a dish here that I did not finish or think that I would not order it again. Sometimes I want to order it again right after I finish. The best dish (probably of all San Diego) is the sea urchin pasta. You really cannot find something more delicious. Desserts here are also fantastic. Doesn't matter what you order.
Prices are reasonable. I would honestly expect to pay more for the quality of this restaurant.
There is no other Italian restaurant I can recommend more that Baci. Service and food are tops, and the location is easy...
