Honestly, me and a group of four other friends got together yesterday April 13th to have some brunch and hang out after not seeing one another for a while and figured this would be a good place to go. Boy were we wrong. Should have gone to Breakfast Republic 5 mins down the road because the service here was TERRIBLE!
I don't even usually leave reviews but man was it actual dogshit. Again, there were a couple of us and one of our friend pairs got there before me and my partner so by the time we came in our table was ready, cant speak to the wait on that. Once we got seated the waited came over to greet us once and ask if we wanted to get started with any drinks, we put in our drinks and then we DONT SEE HIM AGAIN FOR LIKE 20-30 MINUTES! 30 minutes we were waiting on our drinks (mimosa flights and a matcha latte that was definitely made wrong), mind you, WE HAVENT EVEN ORDERED FOOD YET! By the time he gets back with the drinks and we can finally order we jump to do so due to how scarce he was being (even though he was SERVING TABLES NEXT TO US). After we get our drinks I ask him for a straw for my drink, he says he will get one for me as he didn't have any on him as servers usually do. We order food and I wait for OVER 10 MINUTES for a straw. Lets remember the drinks themselves took almost a half hour and I've now spent another 10 going on 15 minutes waiting for a straw, AS HES SERVING TABLES NEXT TO US. I eventually get fed up and go to the bar myself to get the damn straw. 40 Minutes minimum just for an incorrectly made watered down matcha latte is insane when as a barista myself I know it takes 3-5 minutes tops ON THE HIGH END.
Our food finally comes after another maybe 30 minutes, I ordered classic pancakes with sausage, and classic avocado toast. The rest of my table ordered salmon avocado toast, meat lovers scrambles and churro pancakes. thank god the pancakes and sausage were actually decent because BOTH TOASTS WERE ABSOLUTELY BURNT TO ALL HELL. How do you mess up avocado toast? Again, I MAKE THIS MYSELF AT WORK ITS SO EASY. The avocado was spread thin and looked ridiculous, the bread itself was insane, all the food was plated on plates WAY to large for the meal (bigger plates doesn't = fancy fyi management), just a hot mess dude. I wont be returning that's for sure. Felt so bad for leaving minimal (10%) tip but we didn't even see the guy more than 3-4 times in the like 2 hours we were there. Would not recommend. take yourself over to Better Buzz if you want a decent Avocado toast and drive down the street to Breakfast Republic for actual...
Read moreI've frequented the PB location over the last few years and the new location in Mira Mesa opened up recently so I've been meaning to check it out. I would definitely say that the overall quality of staff, food, and experience is WAY better here than in PB!
For anyone who hasn't been to a Broken Yolk before, don't come here expecting anything fancy. The easiest way I've found to explain it is that it's a "better version of IHOP." This weekend we had a large group in town and visited Broken Yolk twice in 3 days. Both times I was very happy with everything.
Service - Our server both times was Erick, who was absolutely fabulous! He was patient with our large groups, had great recommendations, and is generally a pleasurable person. I was very happy to see him the 2nd trip of the weekend since he did a fantastic job round 1.
Food - Quality of the food is great. Like I said, it's nothing fancy, but it definitely hits the spot. If you're looking for eggs/pancakes/hash browns/omelets/etc (any typical American breakfast food), then they have you covered. There is also a good variety of Mexican food options that are great, although nothing super authentic if that's what you're craving.
Experience - The restaurant is clean, has a good lay out, and runs pretty efficiently. Our orders were in quick, food was out fast (even though it was busy), drinks were always full, and our plates were cleared quickly. Everyone else that helped us other than our server was equally as pleasant, so the overall experience was great.
Broken Yolk is a solid recommendation for a sit-down breakfast spot that has good quality food and consistent service. Also, portion sizes are HUGE, so you'll definitely go home...
Read moreThere is a reason I took a 8 year break from The Broken Yolk, and nothing has changed. To be honest not sure why I bothered giving this place another shot when there are so many other breakfast spots. iHop, Denny's and Black Bear Diner at least have flavor and service.
Dishes were Biscuits n Gravy, Chilaquiles and Banana w/ Nutella Crepes. **Biscuits were dry, & flavorless. Gravy was bland, watered down discount store brand (yes I have made homemade biscuits and gravy. Very simple recipe). The only thing that had flavor was the sausage, but it could not save the rest of the dish. **Chilaquiles - tastes like the sort of thing you have leftovers in the fridge and cooked late at night for a quick snack. Chicken was good. Flavor combination, bland. Could of used some salt or spices when cooking. **Crepes Banana w/ Nutella - I've heard of watered down Nutella. Never thought I'd experience it before. Nutella should taste like Nutella, not a hint of Nutella. Crepes were a bit thicker/fluffier. Absorbed the flavors but the crepe itself is like a non-sweet version of a thin pancake. Combined with the watered down Nutella... **Atmosphere - not sure where all the flies came from. We were seated next to a window, and once our dishes came out to the table we were batting flies constantly. Couple dead near the base of the Window.
...nothing has changed. Tried Mission Valley, Plaza Bonita, Downtown, etc. They all, ALL have missed the mark of making my time there worthwhile. There are many other breakfast spots and restaurants in Mira Mesa that have...
