So whenever we visit San Diego and Family it's an absolute must to get Carne Asada Fries. In my younger days as a kid our family would go to S.D. for special occasions with relatives and my cousins during those times introduced us to Carne Asada Fries for the first time was back in the mid to late 90's. They had this Mexican restaurant around the corner that had bomb food. Everything looked so good I would've loved to had order their other items. But at the time we were excited to try asada fries. So we got our 4 large orders of fries and headed back to their house.
If I could type out cuss words without getting my review flagged by Google I would. But dayum, we fell in LOVE! We fell so much in LOVE we crave them till this day and try to get them whenever we can. Unfortunately though where we live in the Central Valley we don't have the luxuries as S.D. does with the great cooks and food. Here in the Cental Valley we used to have a place here called Molecasalsa that served the exact order, flavor and SIZE of the plate and that was our spot here, but alas they are no more. So we continued our quest for that same perfect flavor and no, none of these places here that claim to have the best asada fries in town is any good as Molecasalsa or the ones in S.D. not even close.
So we recently visited Mira Mesa a few weeks ago as I'm now just leaving this review and I told my brother that we should go find some asada fries. Well, he mentions Sayulitas and the Pacman Burrito which is like asada fries but in a burrito and has many other ingredients to it. Sayulitas has a unique menu, so unique the Gods must've had a hand in giving flavor ideas. Looks so good only Gods could have cherished this kind of food.
Well, on our way home I had to get some orders of their asada fries. They were kind of different and missing some items we usually had gotten from the other two spots. But they did have the missing items they were just an extra charge. So the missing ingredients were refried beans and pico de gallo. In their asada fries only comes with gauc, sour cream and cheese. We always get shredded cheese not nacho cheese like these other lame spots here in Central Valley.
I think the cashier at Sayulita's said certain days they put only nacho cheese on there asada fries, YUCK! But don't quote me on that. You can ask for yourself to make sure. That's only if you care about the nacho cheese. So if you're going to get some make sure to add refried beans, pico de gallo and shredded cheese to their asada fries. Oh and grab some red and green chili sauce. Perfect combination. Just superb. The asada fries come out way better! They taste just as ones I had before. SAYULITAS Thank You. We will be back!
Oh P.S. Sayulitas large order feeds 3-4 adults. Just imagine a to-go plate piled with fries, asada and all the other goodies!they have 2 location's but I only know this one in Mira Mesa....
Read moreA value-oriented Filipino/Mexican fusion joint is intriguing. I'm just not sure why they had to make it a 'berto's-style taco shop at its base. The Mexican side of this operation is barely such -- it's like if you positioned your cuisine as Filipino/Italian fusion but based it all on the classic American "checkered tablecloth" "red sauce" joint that serves pizza by the slice.
I ordered the "Pac Man Burrito," one of Sayulitas' most popular offerings. It is an enormous flour tortilla stuffed with tocino (sweet Filipino bacon), carne asada, French fries, sour cream, pico de gallo, and shredded yellow cheese. Named after legendary Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao (currently a senator in the Philippines), I couldn't ever imagine the svelte prizefighter (5'5", 146 pounds) consuming a burrito this large. Seriously, if we're losing our minds over large cups of soda, this burrito needs to be declared a public health hazard. It has the calories of a week's worth of meals wrapped into the largest flour tortilla I've ever seen.
While the size of the "Pac Man Burrito" was something to behold, I disliked that the ingredients are all bunched together rather than spread out evenly within the tortilla. The distribution of the fillings made this burrito difficult to eat, as there is nothing pleasant about chomping off a bite that only includes cold shredded cheese and flour tortilla, or just pico and sour cream with flour tortilla, or whatever. At its core, this is really just a large California Burrito but with Filipino tocino. The novelty of this was interesting at first, but I was already tired of eating it after working through the first 7 or 8 bites (i.e. the first 1% of it). The carne asada was bland and mediocre, the fries were soft and flaccid, and the gigantic flour tortillas they use are otherwise rubbish and smell like gym shoes.
I preferred the "Longaniza Taco," which consisted of Filipino-style longaniza, pico de gallo, and guacamole. The longaniza is sweet, a little spicy, but very good. I liked its somewhat crispy surface and overall juiciness. This taco was good, with potential to be a "top 25" taco in San Diego except for the dire quality of the bagged corn tortillas they use. The tortillas taste like chemicals, a relative disaster associated with an otherwise great idea. The red sauce from the salsa bar is pretty good and is your best salsa pairing with this.
Be forewarned that the atmosphere of this Mira Mesa taco shop was loud, even at 9:30am on a Friday morning when I was there. They had whatever is the modern equivalent of COPS blasting on their TV at volumes that shook the inside of my head. This place is interesting for sure, but...
Read moreI would give no stars if possible. I base my opinion of a place not by the quality of the food always but on their customer service. I am a disabled person, and my mother has Alzheimer's and disabled as well. I met up at this restaurant with my family after my nefews Marine graduation ceremony. I stayed with my mom and asked my son to order a plate of something with shrimp with rice and beans. My son is 20 so quite capable of ordering for me. He told me he ordered a plate with shrimp rice and beans. What I expected and what they brought out were two way different things. They brought out a shrimp cocktail which is in a cup obviously not on a plate and no rice and beans. To me it looked disgusting and something I'd never eat. I took it in to exchange it for what I had my son order me (as we sat outside in their very uncomfortable chairs). They took it and demanded that I would have to pay for something else to eat and would not refund my money. I as I think anyone would do even though I was very hungry, I refused! I left sat back down with my family and they shared their food with me which was just ok to say the least. Needless to say but I will, I will never come back to this place again. But if you do maybe you'll have to write down in triplicate your order or they'll make you pay for what you...
