I have been a fan of BYC in the past - a few different groups, including our Church's men's group would meet there for breakfast. I am a member of the "frequent flyer's" club, whatever they call it.
Last week our department at work had our monthly "birthday lunch" there, and 4 of us took the Broken Yolk Cafe Special Challenge, were one attempts to eat a 12-egg omelet, as well as a large quantity of potatoes and a few biscuits. I have done a few of the "finish it and it is free" challenges, and I win a few and lose a few. This one, I did not finish, but it stood out in a very special way, making me want to write this review.
Usually these challenges have one character in common, which is that the food is desirable. The 96 oz steaks on I-40 across Texas, Farrell's monster Ice Cream Sundae, a burger one I forget where... all of this food was pretty darn good besides being handed out in Brobdingnagian proportions. I gotta say, the 15-inch pizza pan from BYC was filled with food that was right next to "nasty." I was able to finish the omelet, despite it being over-cooked without a single attempt to make it fluffy, and having it filled with American Cheese (people eat that stuff? really?). I was unable to stomach the taste of the "chili" it was smothered with, so I scraped it off to the side to finish it last.
I thought I was doing okay until I hit the potatoes... I'd say they were 30% done okay, 45% burned, and 25% crunchy-undercooked. Blech. I let the guy who was timing us know, and his reply was a smile and "Sorry, no substitutions." The buscuits were okay, nothing special taste-wise, but very nicely presented.
All in all, I paid $30 (with tip) for a big plate full of food that I wouldn't order in the first place, or, if I DID order it, I would send it back as unacceptable.
That will be my forever memory of BYC, because I am NOT going back...

Read moreThe Broken Yolk Cafe in Carmel Mountain Ranch delivers exactly what a great breakfast spot should—warm service, delicious food, and a welcoming atmosphere. From the moment we walked in, we were pleasantly greeted and seated right away, setting the tone for a relaxed and enjoyable meal.
We tried the Machaca Breakfast Plate, the No Name Omelette, and the Nutella Crepes, accompanied by freshly brewed cups of coffee. Each dish arrived hot and promptly, which was impressive given how busy the place was. The Machaca was perfectly seasoned, with tender shredded beef and flavorful peppers that packed just the right amount of kick. The No Name Omelette was hearty and satisfying, loaded with ingredients but still well-balanced. And the Nutella Crepes? Absolutely indulgent—a perfect sweet finish to a savory breakfast.
Our server was friendly and attentive throughout, making sure our coffee cups stayed full and checking in just enough without being intrusive. The overall vibe of the restaurant was cheerful and lively, but not overwhelming, which made for a comfortable dining experience.
It’s easy to see why The Broken Yolk Cafe is rated as one of the best breakfast spots in the area. The combination of fast, friendly service and flavorful food makes it a standout choice whether you're a local or just passing through. We left full, happy, and already planning to come back. Highly recommended for anyone looking to start their day with a satisfying and...
