Here I come to an Indian restaurant while visiting San Diego " Indian palace" on the fifth Avenue absolutely stunning restaurant in looks. Wonderful interior, best location but definitely not the best food. Till the time we reached buffet was over as it was 3pm so we asked them if a la carte is an option they said yes. We got a booth which was very comfortable to sit for 4 people. Here comes now the main part of my review that is food which was a disaster. We ordered meat samosa, chicken tikka kebab, veg biryani and 2 mango lassi. Let's take meat samosa I tasted it and kept it aside as the meat had no flavor even after eating with chutney that they served. Then comes chicken tikka kebab what do I say about this dish I guess they dont know how to make it. It was colored well but no taste at all. I think they forgot to put it in tandoor and just microwave It and served it to us(pictures attached). I think the cook was in a hurry to take a break so served us with some chicken tikka which was not even ready as it cost $16 so didnt wanted to loose money so served the customer whatever is available. When I told this to the server who took our order he said we put less salt and was arguing with me on how chicken tikka is made in the restaurant and how people like it a lot(people really dont know then what Indian food taste like😀😀). Me being the nice girl(as I was very hungry didnt have stamina to argue back) asked him to get green chutney so he got it still the tikka failed to give me some flavour (oh the chutney also had no flavour other than mint). Now comes the biryani which was as good as masala rice. Anything was good was the decor. Am really nice girl giving 2 star dont hate this place but just that dislike it as they took $50 for the food and gave me something that...
Read moreI recently moved back to San Diego after three years away, I used to order from this place a few times a month— sometimes dining in, but mostly take out. the first thing I noticed right out of the bag is shrinkflation, the prices raised and the portions got significantly smaller. I was shocked! and then the quality of the food was equally shocking, we got chicken tikka masala (with coconut milk, which was not offered when I brought up dietary concerns, the guy seemed like he couldn’t care less to offer options) and lamb tikka masala. I barely got any chicken in an already small container, and then it was pure coconut in taste. my guy was also disappointed by his meal. it lacked the quality this place used to put into every dish. then the garlic naan which is $5 a pop, was also small and very greasy, almost waxy. for $10 you’d think you’d get more than 4 triangle pieces of thin naan. I’m really disappointed as I’ve been coming here for 5+ years and have put a lot of people onto it. I’m seeing similar reviews in between the hype (lol). I hope they read these reviews and work on portion size, quality, and consistency.
this is the bag it came in last night, I use the exact same size for pop up markets— a bag for $60 of food should be a little bigger but unfortunately the portion sizes are tiny for...
Read moreWe came here for a late lunch - around 4pm or so on a Saturday. No crowd, got seated promptly. Can't imagine if it gets crowded because this is a HUGE restaurant. Probably one of the biggest Indian restuarant I've seen in my 4 years in the US. We came here because a yelp review of another place said India palace was the best they had had.
Ordered the malai kofta, dal makhani, garlic naan and onion kulcha. Loved it all. The mulch was soft but held together, the naans weren't too hard and had decent garlic on them. The malai kofta was sweet in a good way and the gravy was just thin enough. The dal was also delicious. We got free mango lassis was checking in on Yelp. The lassi tasted like a mildly sweet mango aamras (Indian version of mango milkshake, but handmade).
The decor of this place needs a mention. It looks like a palace. There is a small waterfall when you come in. The tables, booths, walls, pillars, chandeliers are well thought out to keep with the main idea. Even the restrooms are quite authentic.
Parking can be an issue (hillcrest of course) so just park where you can and walk.
I think I've found the place to bring family for...
