Bread & Cie Bakery in the heart of Hillcrest, San Diego's vibrant gay village. As a European, I was on a quest to find a place that could deliver an authentic cappuccino experience, and to my delight, Bread & Cie exceeded all my expectations.
From the moment I stepped into the bakery, I was greeted with a warm and inviting atmosphere. The charming interior, with its rustic wooden accents and cosy seating, created a comforting ambience that made me feel right at home.
Being a connoisseur of cappuccinos, I must say that Bread & Cie's rendition was a masterpiece. The barista skillfully crafted the perfect balance of rich espresso, velvety steamed milk, and a delightful layer of foam. The coffee had a robust flavour and a smooth, creamy texture that left me craving for more. It was evident that the barista knew their craft and had a genuine passion for creating coffee that truly pleased the palate.
For breakfast, I ordered the egg Benedict, and I must admit, it was a feast for both the eyes and the taste buds. The dish was elegantly presented with beautifully poached eggs resting atop a bed of Canadian bacon and perfectly toasted English muffins. The crowning glory was the luscious hollandaise sauce that cascaded gently over the eggs. With each bite, the combination of flavours was exquisite, and the textures were simply divine.
What truly set Bread & Cie apart from other establishments was their attention to detail. It was evident that they took pride in their culinary creations, ensuring that each dish was prepared with care and precision. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, further enhancing the overall dining experience.
Bread & Cie's commitment to quality extended beyond their beverages and dishes. The bakery offered an impressive array of freshly baked bread and pastries that filled the air with a tantalizing aroma. I couldn't resist taking a selection of their artisanal bread home with me, and each loaf was a delightful treat that reminded me of the bakeries back in Europe.

Read moreI live a few blocks away and love the baked goods and sandwiches here. I've come every Saturday for a year for this reason. Unfortunately we have had a string of poor customer service finally prompting this review.
On multiple occasions when we have ordered food for pick up, attention to detail is poor. For example, if I ask for a certain type of salad dressing, this is not always noted. Sometimes the salmon platter has not come with the side of dill cream.
Today there was a chaotic sense of being understaffed, maybe someone called out. The wait time for a to go order (a panini) was 45 minutes. I asked two people to have the loaf of bread sliced and it was not. The most frustrating part of the experience is that I was waiting inside for the to go order, as is the custom to do, and an older woman (brunette and with an accent) asked me to wait outside. She said, "they will bring the order out to you." I waited for 20 additional minutes after the 15 I had waited inside and the order never came. I finally went back inside to ask about it and the order had been sitting in there for quite sometime. The panini was not hot anymore.
When I addressed this with the woman, instead of apologizing, she argued with me and said, "I never told you to wait outside. You wait inside for to go orders and outside if you are eating here." We went back and forth a few times clarifying that I had never had a number or an order to eat here and she told me to go outside.
Instead of her disagreeing with me, it would have been nice if she had just apologized, or given a discount or free coffee. There is a sense I have gotten from this woman, and even the manager, that they are stressed, overwhelmed, and not warm to their customers. It's unfortunate, because I really like the baker and quality of the goods they sell but am less inclined to return after the chaotic and...
Read moreNestled in the heart of Hillcrest, this was an amazing find. Hotel breakfast was substandard so I asked My Daughter to find a suitable local alternative.. she suggested Bread and Cie.
It was seven minutes from our hotel by car and after reviewing the feedback from fellow patrons, we thought we’d give it a try .
The site has limited free parking for patron up to one hour (we were lucky to secure a spot upon arrival at 8 am)
It’s been going for over 30 years according to the signage and I can see why it’s still going . They have an amazing selection of bread, freshly baked on site. After to speaking to Dylan (the manager) a lady master baker has been baking there for 25 years ! Amazing
Staff / service was warm, earthy and super friendly
I ordered the avocado on toast and My Daughter ordered the chicken soup with grilled sandwich. I then ordered the Yogurt parfait with their house made granola
They did not fail to please - super fresh and full of flavour . We were both satisfied with our choices
Ordered an Americano - again it hit the mark.
Ambiance - spacious, funky, warm and just so earthy. We both enjoyed a seat watching the outside world go by.
Dylan is a great host and a gentlemen. He was kind enough to spend some minutes sharing his view of the place and its history - lovely chap
