UPDATE: The owner reached out to me and was overall very kind and sweet. She automatically gave me a refund without my asking for it, which I really appreciated. She heard my concerns and said that they are taking the necessary precautions to prevent anything like below from happening again.

In regards to what I had gotten for takeout, while my sushi roll wasn't what I ordered, the kumi roll was still delicious. It had a nice ratio of filling to rice, so I appreciated that for the price point it was at.

The poke bowl that I went back to pick up was also really tasty and refreshing. It had sprouts, seaweed salad, avocado, and rice. There was no fishy taste and everything played off nicely with each other, so you could tell it was high quality.

Previous Review: This has probably been the worst restaurant takeout experience of my life. I'd give 0 stars if I could.

Firstly, they forgot an item in my order. I didn't notice until I got back home, so I had to go back and grab it. They said it's because they have to do a lot of manual inputs from the online ordering system. That's fine, no big deal. They made the order there for me to take back, which I appreciated but this was already a huge hassle. Then, when I got back home, I noticed that ANOTHER item was the wrong sushi roll. I thought this was also something I could tolerate, because hey. At least I have food. BUT. The final straw was seeing a fly literally crawl all over the rice and salad in my Benito.

I have no idea how long the fly had been crawling all over my food at that point but it's really not worth it. This place isn't worth the time, effort, or money. Save yourselves and go elsewhere, I won't be getting the 2 hours I spent trying to fix my order back. And I probably won't be getting any of my money back. Thanks,...

Cravings for some California Japanese American food, so we hit up Kumi that is located near a Japanese supermarket called Mitsuwa.

There are a number of stores and restaurants especially ramen shops nearby too.

We ordered spicy chicken which comes more like Korean spicy chicken than Japanese style, nevertheless the flavour was great, meat was tender and we can get to swap white rice to brown rice too.

Salmon sashimi was rather unique, sashimi pieces soaking up loads of the soya sauce and oddly this dish reminded me of Chinese steamed fish slices oddly even though this is cold. Flavour wise I am not the biggest fan but does have its uniqueness.

We ordered spicy tonkatsu ramen and it was fantastic, hit the right spot with juicy and thick cut of cha siew sliced, perfectly cooked half egg and generous amount of bean sprout and noodles that cooked just right. The broth was what we wanted for a cold night.

Sushi wise, they have a huge variety and that’s the reason we come to eat at an American Japanese restaurant, love our order of EPA, which is yellow fin with vege and lemon zest toppings. Every table I see ordered sushi in some form, colorful and tasty.

As for my spicy tuna cut rolls, the sashimi was a tad too mushy for me, and the spiciness was a bit overwhelming that covered the freshness of the fish, but it was so hard to explain, the spiciness is addictive and I found myself finishing the whole serving in no time.

Overall highly recommend this place, it was delicious and all the staff were so friendly too, a nice...

Kumi Cafe San Diego, California

Today Chuck and I decided to try a new Restaurant that opened just recently. The restaurant that was once at this location was one of my least favorites Japanese restaurants. I noticed the name change several months ago and it soon peaked my curiosity and could not wait until they opened.

So today we dined at Kumi Cafe and gone were the drab and underwhelming decor of the past restaurant. Now the restaurant a brighter and more modern feel. The tables and chairs were more comfortable to sit at. The food was great and came out quickly. The menu itself was not overwhelming. I hate reading a menu with more than twenty five (25) iitems. The menu items consisted mainly Japanese food with a few some Korean dishes. So we ordered Spicy Calamari, Salmon Poki Bowl, and two sushi Rolls. (Rainbow Roll and The Mesa Roll). The Sushi Rolls were delicious and flavorful. Not fishy at all. The appetizer we ordered was The Spicy Calamari. This was one of the best calamari dishes that I have had. Now some people may have a problem with Sambal with its sourness but sometimes you need a little acidity to help with the flavor. Yes it was spicy but delicious at the same time. The Tonkotsu Ramen had a delicious Broth and Noodles were cook perfectly. Chuck said his Salmon Poki was one of the best he has had.

Overall we had a wonderful and pleasant experience at this new restaurant. The service and food...
