Update 09-06-2017: visited again with two friends. This place has a really unique atmosphere. I joined my friends in the back on the covered porch because a trivial pursuit game was going on in the front. My only complaint is the taste of the IPA beer. I feel like there could be some improvement in the flavors - but this is completely subjective. Also, they don't serve food except for a nacho chip? platter. They do allow for pizza delivery although one of the places turned out to be closed on Tuesdays. A little more organization of the take out food menu like keeping days / times up to date and maybe having all three on a laminated menu card for convenience.
*Again, the atmosphere of the refurbished house alone is worth a visit because there is no place quite like it in San Diego. *
It's a nice place originally it was a home and it was converted into a business so it has a special feel almost like you're in someone's living room a lot of work went into the decorations and maintaining an antique look one of my favorite things was the bathroom sink is a converted manual selling machine table and the treadle or where you spin it with your foot is still there on top is a galvanized pan with rocks in the bottom and some really...
Read moreI get that this is a wine bar but they advertise craft beer as well. I was one of only 3 customers and it still took about 10 minutes to get a beer because the beer was so foamy that the bartender had to pour it into a pitcher and let the foam go down, pour a little more, let the foam settle and repeat for about 10 minutes until there was enough beer to pour a glass.
I almost stopped him cause I was waiting so long. The beer was warm, which is why there was so much foam and tasted funny. To top it off it was almost $10. Way too pricy when the same beer is $7 most other places around the area.
As I was trying to enjoy the warm beer, I'm not sure if he's the bartender or owner but whoever it was lit a joint on the back patio with a couple of friends. And since the back patio door is open from behind the bar the smell just came through the bar.
I get that this is California and it's everywhere, but that doesn't mean that everyone wants it around them and shouldn't be able to smell it throughout the bar.
I live right around the corner and it's a shame that I won't be returning because it would be nice to find a cool spot I...
Read moreNext Door is a local gem and very welcome in an area that sorely needs more great places to hang out. While I generally focus more on their beer selection, I do know that their sangria is very tasty, and they seem very serious about their wine selections. My only complaint on the beer side would be the somewhat slow pace of turnover in the selection from week to week, but this isn't your standard San Diego craft beer bar that blows 3-4 kegs a night. The selection of beer is always good, with a good range of styles to suit most tastes, so this is really a minor issue.
Even though they no longer serve food in the bar, the BBQ place next door, and taco shop down the street make for excellent choices and you are encouraged to bring in outside food, though I do believe Next Door sells the Brother's Provisions cheese plates too.
Don't forget: Tuesday night is trivia night!! We are trivia night regulars and it is always...
