I came here recently with my son, Damian, who frequents the spot. I had not been here before; he described it as a sort of Chipotle concept, where you choose your ingredients, but with fish.
I got a small bowl. I had brown rice and greens as my base, and added 2 scoops of shrimp for my protein. There are also additional protein options including lobster, octopus, scallops, and chicken, for an upcharge. I then opted for avocado, cucumbers, edamame, carrots, and lots of corn. I added on crunchy garlic and original poke sauce. I brought a small container of spicy mayo and ponzu sauce home to try as well.
The shrimp bowl was absolutely delicious! The flavors worked beautifully together and the spicy mayo added a nice little zing when I added it to a bite. The ingredients were fresh and seasoned perfectly.
My first experience at Poki 1½ was fantastic! The gal who waited on us, Anitta, was patient with me as a first time customer and had a friendly, likeable personality and disposition. I will most...
Read moreThis is my favorite "healthy" option for lunch while working in the Claremont / Kearny Mesa area! You customize your bowl or burrito as you go down the assembly line, similar to the ordering experience at Chipotle.
My go-to bowl is a "small", with half white rice and half salad as the base; then salmon and shrimp as my proteins; topped off with seaweed salad and edamame. You can change bowl sizes as you order protein, which is handy if you change your mind and decide that you're hungry and do want to add more fish. I also like that you can get avocado for free, without having to pay extra!
The staff is really friendly - if you want to try one of the proteins, you can ask for a sample and they'll let you try it for free.
To beat the workday lunch rush, I'd recommend getting there around 11:30-11:45am if you can, otherwise sometimes the line is...
Read moreNot usually one to write bad reviews but I think management needs to put their foot down. Walked in and the employees were goofing around, one or two walked back into the kitchen as if to avoid taking care of my order. The employees who were left completely rushed me as if to get back to goofing off, then when I asked about some of the things on the menu (about the sauces, of which there are a lot) I was given a rushed, almost unintelligible answer. After I paid, two guys who were in back came back out and all employees started goofing around again... loudly.. the whole time I ate. Pretty dang unenjoyable experience especially considering the $12 cost of a few scoops of fish. Lots of poke choices around, I'm not very likely to...
