Thai Taste — Restaurant in San Diego

Moved back to San Diego and before I even started to unpack boxes, made the drive from Ocean Beach out to Thai Taste.

In 22 months living out of California, I was in San Diego 18 times...and each time, I went to Thai Taste. The restaurant looks like a hole in the wall and I have had several friends I gave the address to say it took them several tries to find.

I have had an ongoing challenge with the kitchen each time I come in...and it is to make Som Tom as spicy as they know how. Once again, Thai Taste has succeeded in eclipsing the previous version. The folks there have given me the service I have become accustomed to, quick and cheerful,

To shake things up a bit, I tried their Chicken Gra Prow and Panang Curry, both at 7 spicy. Their regular scale is 1-5, and staff shared that anyone ordering 6 or 7 are aware that the spiciness of these dishes will be off the radar. Of course, I ordered the Som Tom, which I order at 10, and have yet to be disappointed.

After spending significant time in both northern and southern Thailand, as I see it, this is the most authentic representation of Thai cuisine I have found in the US. The ingredients are always fresh, the preparation and presentation authentic and the prices are certainly good.

The one possible challenge I have for Thai Taste is to update the dining room. Everything is clean, it just looks old.

I hesitated to visit this Thai restaurant after reading a couple reviews from people getting food poisoning, but I went anyway. Well, I am alive after eating there. This place definitely needs a little makeover. Esthetically, this restaurant needs better paint job... Ordered spicy noodles with chicken. Chicken was generous but the whole dish lacked flavor. It tasted as if they simply put spicy oil in the noodles without any other herbs. The spicy oil they used also lacked the chili pepper taste to it. My friend ordered red curry with beef. The curry was a little more flavorful then my spicy noodles.

The most disturbing part of the experience is that our server prepped our ice water with his bare hand grabbing ice from the ice machine. 🧊 😨🤢 it's cheap and all but I don't know how I feel about...

This used to be my spot for Thai!! I loved this spot, but my last visit gave me food poisoning. Of the 20+ times I have eaten here, I would have given this place 5 🌟 stars each time, but it only takes that one time to mess it all up. I started with the hot pot of the coconut and lemongrass soup. It was delicious as each other time I had ordered it. They have 4 salads that are exquisite; however... this last visit I ordered the glass noodle salad with shrimp. I was four bites in when my stomach completely turned and was not having it! It hit quick and took a full 24hrs to recover. Sorry to say that will be the last time I visit. Textbook staphylococcus food poisoning. So, because of my many good visits, I will give this place a 3 star instead of 1 star. They were good to me, until...
