Hon’s Wun-Tun House 洪記面家 — Restaurant in San Francisco

This is a really sucky thing to write. I have been here a handful of times and the food is super delicious! The service however has gotten progressively worse in my experience.

The first couple of times everything was normal. The third time i went as i was about to pay and the server handed me the receipt and insisted i fill it out in front of her. The whole time i was filling out the bill she was watching me like a hawk and heard her mention “no tip watch” in a low voice to the server next to her assuming i wouldn’t tip . I did and left the restaurant uncomfortable that she would assume that?

The next time i came i was sat and my food took about 45-1hr even though i ordered rice and soup dumplings? Usually it takes about 20-30 mins. I must have asked about 5 times for an estimate and for utensils/menu before ANY server even brought them to me or even water. It was super rude and i felt invisible sitting there even though they definitely sat people after me who did get utensils as they were sat and had their food come out in a timely manner. Once they noticed i was getting impatient and looking around the server hurriedly took my order and was almost annoyed i asked some questions about the food. When the server finally took my order i never saw them again and had to ask a different person for my bill. I ended up paying at the register because they also never came back.

Today was the final time i will eat here. In an effort to skip the unpleasant service here i ordered takeout. At first I was quoted 15-20 minutes. Then the counter person tells me that all of their chefs went on break and i would have to wait 45 mins for their break to be over and come back then they will start my order which would also take another 15-20 mins. They wouldn’t cancel my order on the UE app because “they don’t know how to work the computer” even though it’s literally their job to know how to work it. I call UE and they say i have to wait for it or be charged completely for the food because they have marked it as accepted and preparing. I ask if they can switch to something else and i get home finally after waiting for so long and it tasted terrible. The broth was sour and just not good.

Idk maybe its my fault for trying to give this place another shot because the food was decent but i definitely wont be returning. Every time i am in there i am almost always the only visible person of color and i cant help but feel unwelcome in this establishment. The tip comment felt really targeted. Hon's Wun-Tun House in San Francisco's Chinatown is a classic spot for wonton soup, but my experience landed it at a solid 3 stars.

As expected (given the location), there's only indoor seating, and it gets packed. We went on a weekend and were lucky to snag a seat right away. The service was efficient – our order came out quickly, and they use a neat system where they mark off items on a receipt as they arrive at the table. A nice touch was the complimentary hot tea, which they were good about refilling.

We tried a variety of dishes: BBQ pork wonton noodle soup, dried shrimp rice rolls, seaweed and fried shrimp wonton soup, and Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings). The BBQ pork in the wonton soup was definitely a highlight – sweet and perfectly cooked. The broth was flavorful, but the noodles were a bit of a letdown. They were the thin variety and slightly undercooked, lacking that satisfying soft texture. Overall, the soup was decent, but not quite what I was hoping for.

The Xiao Long Bao were large, but nothing extraordinary. The good news is the shell wasn't doughy, which can be a problem at some places. The dried shrimp rice rolls were tasty, but make sure you enjoy them hot – they cool down quickly and lose their appeal.

Overall, Hon's Wun-Tun House is a good option if you're looking for a quick and affordable Chinatown meal. The service is fast, and the complimentary tea is a nice touch. However, if you're a serious wonton noodle soup connoisseur, you might want to keep searching for that...

Recommended by my best friend, we had lunch here on Thanksgiving day. It was so crowded, but luckily, we only waited for around 10 minutes until we got seated. This place is lively with casual dining.

鮮蝦雲吞麵 / Signature Wunton Noodle Soup ($11.50) Their signature wonton noodle that consists of the thin and straight noodles with chasiu pork, wonton, green onions in a clear and savory soup. A comfort food indeeed!

涼瓜牛肉煎米粉 / Beef Bitter Melon Pan-Fried Vermicelli ($16.95) This menu is unique! My first time trying this one. So, basically it is beef with bitter melon that are covered with the crunchy pan-fried vermicelli pancake. I'm not a fan of bitter melon, but this one is considered okay because it's not bitter.

香酥蔥油餅 / Green Onion Pancake ($10.95) Oh.. This green onion pancake is full with green onions inside and crispy outside as well! Love it ❤️
