I only have good things to say about this wonderful place.
Most importantly, the food is fabulous and the definition of value-for-money: generous portions, healthy (most choices, I guess ;-)), fresh, and tasty. The coffee is perfect, no matter if espresso-based drinks from that awesome Italian machine or good old drip.
Then, the neighborhood vibe: this place seems to be a community hub, where locals/regulars come and go, exchanging friendly words with the owners like they're all part of one big happy family, and where visitors (like us) are treated just the same and made feel warmly welcome.
But, maybe most importantly these days, for anyone who still feels (or is) vulnerable to Covid: this is one of the (if not THE) most well-ventilated restaurants/cafés I've even had the pleasure to dine in. For almost 1.5 years now I carry a Aranet4 CO2 monitor almost everywhere I go to assess the risk of airborne transmission for me and my little family, and I'm very impressed with this place. With only a few customers but fully staffed the Moonlight Cafe dining room, which is joined by the very open kitchen, had nearly outdoor fresh air in qualities (550 ppm CO2, for those who are interested) - and even at high capacity, when due to heavy rain all of a sudden over 30 people sought shelter (and good food) at the cafe, the numbers stayed at 670 ppm max.). That's better than almost any other indoor area I've been to in the past few months. This seems to be one of the safest places to dine in, when it comes to air quality!!!
And last but not least, this family run business (24 years and counting, the extremely friendly owners told me) has invested in an impressive steal construction, to make this food haven also a safe haven in the not so unlikely event of an earthquake here in San Francisco.
Bottom line? This the place you wanna be, no matter if you find yourself in some kind of crisis (an empty stomach, caffeine withdrawal, a pandemic, an earthquake) or if you're just in need for a nice cuppa joe and a friendly chat with some nice folks. All of these things and more can be found here. Don't miss out and check it out...
Read moreto be fair. this is not a dinner place. so maybe it's my bad for going around 7/8 pm but this place was not it. first of all. what in pandora's box is going on with the menu. tell me why there's crepes and omelettes (so far so good) and then you look over to the secret jank menu (printed on planks of wood?????) and there's ramen and...poke?......did i read that wrong? no. no you didn't. talk about fusion cuisine. talk about an american melting pot. but some things just aren't supposed to melt together like raw fish and crepes????? like be so fr rn the menu is all over the map LITERALLY. i ordered a basic eggs and potatoes breakfast plate and it was...fine. i'm not a chef and i fear as though this level of cooking was well within my wheelhouse. my friend ordered the turkey sandwich and got turkey with some tomato and lettuce. like ig what else do you want in a sandwich but i think maybe they can jazz up the plates a bit with some chips or something idk. that said, decorations buss. they make absolutely no sense. it's like youre in an antique shop from another dimension she is quirky quirky. but i like that vibe especially here in the city. overall, meh experience but i'll probably go for an actual crepe next time. the normal (not japanese?) menu is idnetical to crepevine in berkeley so i'm assuming theyre owned by the same person. crepevine in berkeley is so good tho so i'm not sure if it's a local management...
Read moreWent here on 6/08/18. Was horrible😡. I ordered a tuna melt an iced mocha, and a mango smoothie. I love tuna melts and some places make them really awesome like JB’s on 17th St. But here was the worst Tuna melt I ever had. They gave me a tuna salad (cold) and the cheese was just a piece of cheese straight from the fridge. I wonder what is the meaning of Tuna “Melt” for them. Any ways I also order a Mango smoothie which had 3-4 more fruits in it, but I could only tasted the orange. I also ordered an iced white mocha (which I did ask if they could make it cold and they said yes, but instead I got a hot white mocha. The worst thing that everything was to go an I notice all the mistakes until I was home. I almost pay $30 bucks so everything there is overpriced on top of the horrible mistakes they made. This was my first and last time going there, I don’t recommend no one...
