This place definitely takes me back to my time in India, and every bite brings me back to when I was staying with my aunt while studying there. The lamb Kadahi is amazing—they use fresh vegetables with large chunks of bell pepper and onions. They don’t just scoop it from a large pot and microwave it when someone orders, like most Indian restaurants. Every dish is made to order, so there's still a crunch when you bite into the bell pepper.

Even though I went alone, they didn’t skimp on the portions. I got a plate of rice meant for 2-3 people, two legs/thighs of chicken tandoori, and a big bowl of Kadahi. I had to take half of it home because of the huge portions.

The mango lassi? Just WOW! It has more mango than yogurt, making the quality outstanding. Unlike other places where there's only a hint of mango, here it tastes like you’re actually eating a real fresh mango.

If you’re from out of town, I’d encourage you to try this place. Don’t dismiss it just because it’s in the TL. Sure, it’s not the best area, and the street has its issues, but once inside, you’re surrounded by the rich aroma of curry.

The mango lassi was so good I ordered another to go. For two dishes, a plate of rice, and two mango lassis, my total was $29.75, plus a 25% tip because the server was attentive and kind. And it’s worth noting—this can feed up to three people! Unlike that ramen place on Geary (you know, the one with the unnecessary long line) where I paid $55 for two bowls of ramen, and they forced a 15% gratuity on a bill for bad service, then place the check before you can finish eating just to serve the...

Great food and great prices - plus, no wait unlike their popular neighbor, Shalimar. The quantity of food was great but the portions were small, so plan to order ~1-2 dishes per person depending on how hungry you are. Prices are super affordable, and they deliver free on orders $20+!

There are some things I prefer at Pakwan (biryani's, aloo gobi, naan) over Red Chilli but I can say that Red Chilli offers some unique plates and cheaper pricing that Pakwan can't beat.

Chicken Kadahi - 4.5 STARS ($6.99) - Chicken cooked with fresh tomato, onions & bell pepper in Indian spices. The chicken was very moist, and the sauce went perfect with rice.

Chicken Momos - 5 STARS ($8.99) - Minced chicken marinated in Nepali spices stuffed in flour wrap & steamed; served with a cold curry dipping sauce. The texture of these dumplings were perfect and I liked the meaty, flavorful chunk of meat inside. The wrapper was not too thick or overcooked.

Naan - 3.5 STARS ($0.99 / each): Fresh and slightly oily at the top, but cooked thin and not as fluffy as Shalimar's.

Lamb Vindaloo - 2.5 STARS ($7.99): Lamb with potatoes coked in a hot spicy curry. The flavor was what you would expect, but I've had better. The chunks of lamb were very dry, and there wasn't much. Next time I return I will not order any lamb dishes.

Aloo Gobi - 4 STARS ($5.99): Cauliflower & potatoes cooked with herbs & spices. I always love this dish, I've had more unique and more flavorul aloo gobi's but I've never had such a cheap one. Tasty and delicious must order dish.

Pro-Tip: They offer...

So didn’t get very far at this place, asked the guy at the counter about lunch specials. Clearly says everything is on special, yet he hands me the regular lunch menu. I ask him if it includes rice or a Naan, which she says yes. Then hands me the bill with extra charges for 2 naans. I politely inform him that we have just had a conversation about what it includes 😂 I mean less than 30 seconds ago, where his English skills were not so great. All of a sudden his English is really really good. He said already put it in the register so you have to pay it 😂 this place obviously thrives on ripping off people it feels like it can get away with it. Adding extra charges.

So be careful when you’re asking questions because they’ll play the game of foreigner, and all of a sudden, when it comes time to bring up your bill, they claim that you were informed of it. LIES!!!

I had to walk out on this place not even want to rate the food since the experience was so bad In just...

Ignore my poor photograph in the review, ignore the lack of fancy decor of the restaurant, ignore the neighborhood! This is not your usual restaurant. This feels more like a food service station where you will be treated like a friend and can always have a hearty meal even if you can't pay for it.(Their service to homeless people is well known) We had the veg thali and we managed to finish it off in spite of our initial reservations about the large portions. It comes with 3 sabji+ daal+ naan+ rice+ salad+ papad (phew!) All the 3 sabjis were well made especially the palak sabji. When we asked for the secret ingredient of their food, the handsome gentleman pointed his finger upwards giving all the credit to God! :) It's a pity we discovered this place on the last day of our trip. Will definitely come here again; recommended!! This last line is for the gentleman on the counter.. Did you see the film we talked about? :)

10/10 experience. Food was incredible and interesting. Everything was made fresh and didn’t take too long to prepare. It’s also very cheap. Had one naan and the lamb Kadahi to try and it was great. They added a lot for free like the unions, so healthy. Try the sweet sauce! I recommend getting the Thali. I’m leaving the city but when I’m back I’ll get the Indian thali with tikka massala. I’m still shocked from the experience. So many flavors reminding me of my time in India. Portion size was above average and plenty for a big guy like me. Only improvement would be the presentation of the food and restaurant. They could hire a female designer to redesign the place + make all the dishes and decor look impeccable. But I’m glad they didn’t do that or there be a long line and double the price.
