Hey there reader, take a moment, kick back, and give this a read through if you'd like a play-by-play of an excellent meal.
Surisan is a playful fusion Korean restaurant. It has just enough of the traditional to satisfy those people who are familiar with Korean cuisine but puts a fun and unique twist on lots of traditional dishes. I love how the chef has incorporated Korean fast foods like fried chicken and ramen cups into the meals, and yet maintained a high level of quality and deliciousness.
We started with a tofu salad. I thought that the inclusion of the pickled raddish balanced well with the avocado and the fried tofu. The dressing was light and it was beautiful with the edible flowers.
The Pimped Up Ramyun was an amusing dish as it is served with the Ramen cup on its side. It was rich and spicy, but it was a tiny bit dry and would benefit from some sauce. The Bulgogi Fried Rice is much more a traditional dish but was delicious, it's a deceptively simple dish if the balance is off. Thankfully Surisan's was just right. The Dolsot Bibimbap was a lovely suprise with the pickled radish, mushrooms, and other sliced veggies--which were a departure from the kinds of things you'd find in a traditional bibimbap. Finally the Chicken Cup Bap with the smashed “Shin” cup noodle fried rice, fried egg, popcorn K-style fried chicken, dry seaweed, cheese, spicy mayo was also lively dish. It made me think of long nights at university eating fast food and cup noodles, but in a much more elevated and gourmet version.
We loved the Raspberry Lemonade and the Tea Forte ginger pear teao was so delcious and such an excellent pairing for many of the dishes that I went home and bought it.
Overall Surisan has good service and a relaxing interior (if a little bit cold when we visited) and kinda chill for a place that obviously has a sense of whimsy and humor in its food. I would urge you to give it a try. It's what good fusion food should be, the best of different cuisines and styles all tangled together in delicious...
Read moreA beautiful, sunny and mild Saturday morning in San Francisco is something to relish. We decided to top it with brunch at Surisan as some in the group had previously dined over there, and had good recommendations. Taking a look at the menu presented plenty of options for the vegetarians as well. We put our name on the wait-list through Yelp. It limits to reserve for a max of 6 people, but if you are trying to reserve for more, you can put the number of people in the notes section. Following the COVID protocols, the hostess asked to see the vax cards, so do not forget to carry these as long as these mandates and the recommendations are in place. The hostess also insisted that all the people in the party be present before they could seat us. Even though couple of people in the group were parking across the street, and it wouldn't have taken them more than few minutes to arrive, we were still asked to wait. Once everyone showed up, we were immediately seated. We preferred to sit inside. The environment was lively with almost all the tables taken, and it seemed everyone was having a good time. We ordered some Bloody Marys, Matcha Mojito, Berry Makkoli and OJs for the table. All of these were good, but the mojito with whipped cream stood out. For brunch we ordered Sailor's scrambled, Japchae rice with tofu, Dolsot bibimbaps with chicken mango and one with tofu. Presentation was nice, food was hot and flavorful when served, and serving size was large enough that we could share. Ricotta pancakes were also great, topped with slice of orange, strawberries and blueberries, definitely a must try. Service was good too. It didn't take very long for us to get the food after ordering, and the server and other wait staff were quick in responding and meeting any requests. 20% gratuity and SF employee benefit mandate amounts were already added to the bill. Definitely going back to try some other items on the menu, and surely recommend if you like to try...
Read moreIs this app seriously not letting me rate this place more than 5-stars? This place is off the rails delicious and I can't believe I haven't tried it before. Thanks to Doordash I was able to try it because the Fisherman's Wharf area has absolutely no parking and any native SF resident would know. I'm surprised no one has posted pictures of the takeout on here or Yelp so here they are! I ordered the BBQ Family Set, Belly BAP, and Korean Fried Chicken (+honey butter and soy&garlic sauces). My gosh where do I start my review?
BBQ Family Set ($65 as of 07/2020): It comes with the three staple meats of KBBQ (bulgogi, kalbi, spicy pork), box of lettuce and radish, and kimchi and they are all delicious and perfectly made. They also give three bowls of rice so I assume this meal is for a family of three. It tastes like your average Korean restaurant anywhere in SF so for $65 I think it's a bit pricey. But for a more upper-scale place like Surisan, it's a good deal. I really appreciate that it wasn't oily at all like some restaurants.
Belly BAP ($15): Amazing. Don't change anything about it. It also comes with so much pork belly, it's so worth. And it's high quality pork belly because there's low fat to meat ratio.
Korean Fried Chicken ($23): BEST FRIED CHICKEN in SF, hands down the winner. Twelve HUMONGOUS pieces and two sauces for $23 is such a steal. It is so crispy and juicy. Perfectly, perfectly seasoned. A lot of fried chicken places in SF are so overly salted. I would come here just for the chicken. If you order the fried chicken with sauce on the side, the "Crispy" option is just the chicken without sauce. Might as well take advantage of the sauce by ordering it on the side for the same price. I got the Honey Butter (recommend) and Soy & Garlic (not my favorite but...
