Rode the cable cars twice during recent vacation in SF. I cannot describe how huge of a difference your experience will be if you ride on the “outside” of the cars (hanging onto the poles -which isn’t as dangerous as it might seem), versus sitting inside the car.
On our first ride, we were sitting inside and although we enjoyed the experience, it was nothing compared to the folllowing day’s ride when we were hanging from the outside!
Hanging onto the poles on the outside is incredible, it’s not about speed or danger (it is neither particularly speedy nor dangerous), but a totally unique experience that you will never forget. The operator will sometimes tell you “lean in at this corner” or “brace yourself for the stop” and it really makes you feel part of something special.
The cable car staff and operators are really fantastic, one in particular was really friendly towards us and gave us a great tip, I wish I knew his name so I could shout out a special “thank you” to him!
We had a Clipper Card (local transit card) that was $50 for 7 days local transit and this includes unlimited cable car rides -well worth it if you plan on using transit during your visit to the city. Regular cable car fare is $8.
Lineups can be very long… definitely try to get there super early, or alternatively get on...
Read moreVery nice experience riding the cable cars through the city of San Francisco. We have enjoyed the cable cars each time we have visited the city. It is easy to board the cable cars.
There are 3 lines. Two start at Powell and Market and continue to the Fisherman's Wharf area. The third one starts at California and Market and continues to Van Ness Avenue. You can board at the cable car turntables at the beginning or end of each route, or look for the brown-and-white cable car sign post along the route.
Our last visit, I had a great conversation with a gentleman while waiting at the Cable Car End. Long story short . . . he sketched as we traveled on the cable car. I enjoyed seeing the sites and watching him sketch. To my surprise, he gave me the sketch due to a "One of a kind" compliment I made at the...
Read moreWhat a waste of time. In the mornings they fill the carts to the very braking point and then later during the day won’t fill them and have you waiting in line because ppl only want to ride the front instead of letting people that don’t care go. There’s no common sense. Fill one cart than next ride send one empty or half full for the people waiting in stops can ride. And go down and as people if they want to go and don’t care to ride the front. So much time wasted, but common sense ain’t common. Do only one way for the experience but take an Uber or ride the bus back. There was one nice transit worker that you can tell did not the have the ego or arrogance of a person that hates their life. What a...
