Late night dining often brings with it a unique charm, and my recent visit to El Grullo in East San Jose, specifically for pozole, was nothing short of memorable. They’re open everyday until 11pm, so get yours while it’s still hot and fresh! I got my pozole to-go (which is not recommended), BUT the moment the containers of pozole were placed in front of me, I was enveloped by the invigorating aroma of spices and hominy. The broth, with its vibrant red hue, was a festival of flavors—zesty, robust, and perfectly seasoned. Each spoonful awakened the senses, a delightful dance of tanginess and warmth. The puerco was exceptionally tender, effortlessly yielding to the fork, a testament to the hours of simmering care it must have undergone. Each bite was succulent, with the pork absorbing the harmonious medley of spices and chiles, further enhancing the rich depth of the soup. Adding a satisfying crunch to the meal were the tostadas. Their toastiness provided a welcome contrast to the heartiness of the pozole, each bite crackling delightfully with every interaction with the flavorful broth. However, I did find myself longing for a dip of crema, which would have added a creamy richness and slight cooling touch to the fiery warmth of the pozole. Even so, the experience was way far from lacking. The environment was quite opening, to say the least — the señoritas were very eye opening to other people of any race trying their food. In sum, El Grullo delivered a late-night culinary adventure that lingered on my palate long after the meal was over. The expertly crafted pozole, combined with the unfussy yet cozy ambiance, makes it a must-visit for any food enthusiast seeking a soulful and satisfying meal.

Servers were nice and helpful. Inside was old. Needs some paint and a good dusting. Seems to need some updating. Definitely needs air conditioning. The food was ok. Rice and beans good but cheese could be added to beans for flavor. My tamales fell apart, seemed frozen then microwaved not fresh tasting or moist. Dry... My mom got chile verde and she did not like it. My sister got flautas/taquitos... they were decent. Needed seasoning or flavor. Chips (seemed out of bag) and salsa was hot/spicy.

It's sign caught my attention and then their online menu. What a fabulous selection of sincerely traditional Mexican foods! Just had to go taste some of those! Early afternoon on a Sunday and most tables were busy. Found a table, ordered the Barbacoa Plate and enjoyed chips and salsa. My meal was delicious, priced reasonably, staff friendly and helpful. If you're searching for great and traditional Mexican foods, be sure to visit here.
