La Piñata — Restaurant in San Leandro

Been celebrating birthdays here for 10 years… but my last experience was horrible. It was a busy day so we decided to place an order to-go… we waited in line for a while and finally we were next … however the person in front of us took a while and the cashier was having some sort of trouble… so the manager came out and decided to help the line…. Instead of helping us. He walked us to the hispanics behind us and said “I’l help you guys next”. And they went over to his cash register and placed their order…. We politely asked him why couldn’t was place out order if we are next in line and we have been waiting a while. He told us that we can just wait!! We told him how discriminating that looked and he literally told us “Oh well! Just wait for him he is already going to help you.” ….. yet we we never helped.

Never visiting here again! That was wrong! You don’t ever tell a customer “Oh well!” He never even apologized!

2023 Update! Family member wanted to grab a quick bite after being at Kaiser hospital all day. Although I didn’t want to go I wanted to spend time with family….

Once again horrible service. We were seated and 2 tables were seated after us and got drinks before anyone even came to take our order. We patiently waited and a lady spoke in Spanish to the two other tables and walked right by us. We called her back and politely asked for service. She told us she would be back to take our order and never returned. Eventually a guy came to take our order and not only was my order incorrect but it was a bug in it. I have to say that I was disappointed the last few times I visited this restaurant. The reason my rating isn't lower is because I have had good food and drinks there in the past. So, they could easily get a higher rating by improving their chefand bartender.

The atmosphere is still nice. There is the main restaurant seating area for family style eating. They can accommodate large groups. But I often prefer to sit in the bar area where the atmosphere is more up beat. There are plenty of televisions to watch the games and you generally are not rushes through service.

One of my disappointments with the food is that the tamales were terribly dry. I really tried to eat them but I couldn't. When the waiter asked if I wanted a ToGo bag for I said no. But he never asked if I were unhappy with it.

They also disappointed me by ruining my favorite drink, Horcharita, by adding Fireball liquor to it without asking. I wasn't expecting it and it hammered my taste buds. I did question the waiter about it and he told me that it comes that way. I have this drink everytime I go there and it never had it before. He questioned the bartender and told me they changed it three months ago. He also showed me the description in the menu. But I hadn't read the menu. I ordered from experience. In this case, I would expect that they remove the drink from the bill. But alas, no. I didn't ask them to but the fact that they didnt offer made me decide that it will be a very long time before they see me again. And, as with this review, I will say the same to anyone that asks if I want to go or how I like it....

I totally understand that going in on a Saturday we should have a wait for tables and for food but the wait was so long. 25 minutes for a table for 4 (but tons of tables for 2 were seated before us at booth and tables that could seat 4) We were finally sat at a tiny booth in the corner. Our drink orders were taken pretty quick and chips and salsa arived. We asked for a second salsa and 5 minutes later it came. Once the chips were gon our waitress was no where to be found. 10 minutes later someone else came to get our meal order, bring us a nother basket of chips and drink refills. Chip basket was half full and drinks came back with no ice. The horchata was not as amazing as it usually is. The chips were gone quick and no more ever came. We ordered Chicken Mole enchilada dinner, shrimp fajitas, vegi famous burrito, pescado. When the salad came for the pescado, the waitress told us that there would be a wait on the food because they had a party of 15 in the back. 10 minutes later they brought the fish and sides for the fajitas. 5 minutes later they brought the sauce for the fish. 5 minutes later the enchiladas. 2 minutes later the burrito (missing the sour cream and guacamole on top). 5 minutes later the shrimp fajitas (lacking flavor and had no salt). And 2 minutes later and the tortillas. After that our waitress never came back to our table. We sat there for 10 minutes waiting for our check and we finally waved her over for the check and boxes. Our total came out to $105.00. Wish we just would have went somewhere else.
