Tenkyu — Restaurant in San Rafael

This family-owned gem is one of my favorite spots to visit. From the moment you step inside, you're greeted with a warm, welcoming atmosphere that feels like home. There's no sense of rush or over-attention, just a relaxed and pleasant vibe.

The menu offers a great variety of options, both cooked and raw. We started with miso soup and sashimi, paired with hot sake as an appetizer. For dinner, we enjoyed the Scope Special, Spicy Tuna Roll, Spider Roll, Dragon Roll, Lucky Stars, and finished off with the Chef's Special Roll. The fish was fresh, and every dish was absolutely delicious.

Tenkyu was disappointing. I can’t figure out the the discrepancy between our experience in person and these reviews, but it was one of the least enjoyable meals we’ve had in years - haphazard and low quality; the chefs choice sashimi we ordered was smoked salmon and boiled shrimp with some white fish for $40; would not recommend. The wasabi was a neon green play dough.

We eat plenty of sushi at varying price levels; this was low quality at too high a price. Can’t quite figure it out as I look at the online pictures and reviews… maybe a remarkably bad night? Or distribution issues? No idea but I’d proceed with...

I love Tenkyu! I always end up overeating maybe a bit when I get here, but there are just so many good choices! Everything I've gotten here has been wonderful. It's a treat, and all reasonably priced. They have a great assortment of rolls, and I love checking out the special rolls they happen to have.
