I have been coming to Cafe Chew since they opened almost 15 years ago since day one. Bob and Tobin did a fabulous job and their food and atmosphere was amazing. I was a loyal regular customer for years. It was one of my family's favorite spots in Sandwich. The restaurant sold earlier this year in 2023. Sadly, I was worried that the new owner would change things. New owners often do when acquiring new businesses. But, I remained open minded and returned after a bit of a hiatus. I missed it! Today, I went with my family. When we approached the counter, the man was rude. I did not recognize him, nor much of the staff there that I had come to know over the years. I had inquired with him about my favorite bakery item that I routinely enjoyed and he told me that they hadn't made them in 3 years. When I told him that I had it during the summer, instead of responding kindly he began to argue with me and became a bit aggressive and tried to sell me on another treat. I went on to add that to my order and move on from the ordering experience, hoping the food would make things better. I was happy to see the return of real plates and silverware when I the food arrived. Much of the decor is unchanged. Food portions were the same, however, the food is now bland. We chose items that we regularly ate in the past. I'm not sure what happened to the recipes, but this is not the same food. While we were sitting and eating, we witnessed this man who was behind the counter go on to further argue with other customers who were given the wrong food when served. He was quite defensive and argued with the customer telling him that this is what he ordered, when the customer was adamant, this man returned to the kitchen. His voice was booming and carried and everyone witnessed the interaction. It was hard to avoid even if you tried. I'm not sure how that all played out as we left soon after. I will say that kindness goes along way with customer service and in our short time there, this gentleman left a bad taste in our mouths. We are easy customers and were willing to roll with changes and excited to welcome and support these new business owners in our small town. However, we will not be returning after this experience. I do hope that the food returns to the original recipes that I am sure were sold along with the business. Like they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Update: 12/4/23-Turns out after I looked at their Facebook page, the rude gentleman is the new owner! He flat out lied that he had worked there for the past 3 years. No wonder why as a regular customer I didn't recognize him. Now that makes me even less inclined to support him and...
Read moreNestled in the charming town of Sandwich, Massachusetts, Cafe Chew offers a whimsical twist on the classic sandwich experience. As you step into this cozy eatery, you're immediately enveloped by the warm aroma of freshly baked bread and the buzz of contented diners.
The menu is a treasure trove of culinary creativity, but two sandwiches, in particular, stand out: the Bavarian and the Godfather. The Bavarian is a masterpiece encased in a soft pretzel roll, its exterior glistening with a delicate sheen, hinting at the buttery bliss within. Each bite is a harmonious blend of textures and flavors, transporting you to the cobblestone streets of Munich.
On the other hand, the Godfather commands respect, served on a robust Ciabatta roll that's both airy and satisfyingly chewy. It's an offer you can't refuse, with layers of savory meats and cheeses that meld together in a symphony of Italian gusto.
But let's not forget the humor in devouring these delectable creations in a town aptly named Sandwich. It's as if every bite is a playful nod to the town's namesake, adding an extra layer of joy to the dining experience. It's hard not to chuckle when you're literally eating a sandwich in Sandwich – it's like a culinary inception that delights both the palate and the sense of humor.

Read moreUnfortunately we weren't able to experience the food as the owner, Tobin Wirt, was so incredibly rude we chose to leave, The write up stating that "Tobin Wirt and Bob King are masters at making every guest feel like they've stepped into a friend's cafe house" proved to be very false in my experience with Tobin. This is a dog friendly "counter-serve nook" with outdoor seating. I am a recent residence of the Mashpee area and was going out for a nice breakfast with my two young adult daughters and my grand dogs. We had been assigned a table by the pleasant "hostess" as we waited in line to place our order. As we stood in line no one let us know that the dogs could not enter the wide open area to go to the counter and place our order. As my daughter got to the front of the line Tobin hollered at her that no dogs were allowed. Then when she questioned him on how to order with a dog, he stated "that's your problem!" I was at a separate register as we were ordering separately and was startled by the exchange. My other daughter took both dogs out as my youngest went up to order. Moments later she came out crying as he continued to be rude to her. We decided we did not need to dine in a place that would treat people so poorly. I went in to get a refund on the orders placed and he was in the middle of talking about us with another customer and an employee was walking up to get in on the conversation. Very unprofessional. This seemed like it would be a wonderful place for me to meet up with friends and to take family but now that...
