A photograph of the tri-color gnocci, juxtaposing the the past with the present, offers a story more eloquent than words ever could.
In the grand tapestry of dining experiences, there are certain moments that irrevocably alter our perception of a beloved establishment. The ethereal magic that once enveloped Arnoldi's—much like the innocence of childhood or the fleeting exuberance of graduation day—seems to have dimmed, leaving in its wake a somber shadow of its former self.
Let's start with the good. The character of Arnoldi's remains unchanged. I returned with a small group of people some of whom have never been here before. The open backyard and bocce court, the lights, the music drew us in...like moths to a flame. For a fleeting moment, I allowed myself to believe that Arnoldi's was back. But that thought quickly disappeared leaving me to wonder whether I will ever come back here again.
The ordeal that followed was a study in patience—albeit one I did not volunteer for. In total we waited 1 hour 47 minutes for our food. 40 minutes was us sitting in an anticipatory limbo waiting for our server to arrive. 1 hour and 7 minutes was lost waiting for entrees. We got our cocktails pretty quickly, and our server brought our appetizer 35 minutes into the wait, but he brought it to the wrong table--a mistake that went unaddressed for another 25 minutes.
Despite the long wait, I had a hope at the back of my mind that the food will redeem itself. As the plates arrived, so too did the realization that Arnoldi’s culinary magic had all but vanished. The new cacio e pepe was super diluted. The remaining dishes, though passable, were marred by a sense of melancholy, as if they, too, mourned the loss of their previous glory. To add insult to injury, prices went up 20% across the board while the food quantity shrunk by half--a discrepancy that was as disheartening as it was perplexing.
It is only fair to commend the staff, who, despite the chaos, were unfailingly courteous and apologetic. They confided that the new owner had rushed the reopening, despite being woefully under prepared in terms of staffing. One can only hope that these...
Read moreWe had made a reservation online to celebrate two friends’ birthdays. We specified that we wanted outdoor seating in said reservation as it’s one of the questions they ask when you’re booking online. We also specified that we would be celebrating two birthdays.
Upon arrival, the host had us wait for a bit and then attempted to seat us inside. We explained that we had requested outdoor seating and if possible that’s what we’d prefer. After some back and forth we were able to be seated outdoors.
Once we were seated, it took a very long time to get our menus and subsequently for the waiter to return for our drink orders. 3/4 of us ordered different cocktails. The waiter ended up mixing up our order and gave me a random drink from the menu. When I asked what I was drinking as its didn’t taste like the drink I had ordered he apologized and said he’d go check with the bar- I had ordered a vodka drink and ended up with a gin based drink. After some back and forth I said I didn’t want that drink and was getting a tad frustrated and just decided not to have a drink.
We were finally able to place our food orders- two of us got the chicken Parmesan. Another got chicken piccata and the other got another pasta dish. The chicken Parmesan was fine but definitely tasted as if it were a frozen chicken cutlet that had been reheated. The quality compared to the cost of the plate didn’t equate for me at all. The side of pasta served with it was also nothing special.
They also failed to mention or acknowledge that we were celebrating two birthdays as was stated in our reservation.
Overall, I’d skip this place. There are many other better quality Italian restaurants in town. I won’t be recommending this spot nor will I be returning- the price certainly isn’t justified by...
Read moreHow do I even begin to say how amazing Arnoldi's made my wedding night. Serving and catering to 39 people is never easy but the team made us feel so welcome and gave us an experience I'll remember for the rest of my life. Sara the event manager was so down to earth, a joy to talk to, and made the whole planning process easy. The prices are reasonable, especially for Santa Barbara.
My guests are still raving about the food. And the family style we had at our tables was so fun, everyone loved being able to try each entree. They put a curtain up for privacy and it felt like we had the whole restaurant to ourselves.
I've also never received such amazing service anywhere ever. I'm easy to please but the servers and bussers were so on it, helpful, attentive, every good word in the book. Especially the head waiter (kicking myself for not getting his name) but I've seen him there in the past. His personality was so warm and fun. He immediately greeted my husband and I to champagne just for us. Then throughout the night made sure my wine glass was never empty. He and the team helped us cut and serve the cake, he had a rag ready for our faces for the inevitable cake smash haha.
My nieces and family got to enjoy some bocce ball after dinner. Nobody ever made us feel rushed when the food was done (which honestly if I was still working in a restaurant I'd be so ready for us to leave haha). I could seriously go on and on.
Long review short: Arnoldi's Cafe checks all the boxes you could want. Whether it be for a romantic dinner, a casual hang out and drinks, or an event like a wedding. It's the perfect local restaurant and event space for all occasions with amazing food and even more outstanding service. Thank you Arnoldi's crew for making my...
