My Daughter and I stayed at Hotel Santa Barbara and it was overall a poor experience. The hotel -rooms/stairs/hallways are super outdated and old looking in a non charming way. Nothing has been remodeled for ages and the feeling you get online with some of he images is not the feeling you get when you arrive.
Pros regarding our room: Super cosy mattresses + almost no noice from downtown activity at night. Pros regarding our stay: Great location in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara.
Cons regarding our room: Very old and outdated/heavy feeling regarding all furnitures and curtains. The view from our room is pointing at a roof - not very charming Refrigerator is not cooling very well and we had to shut it off at night since it is very noisy as well as the heating/cooling system. In the bathroom the shower-glass-wall is so short that lots of water is splashing to the floor so it is very slippery and there is nothing to swipe the water other than the towels that we use after the bath. There is no fan/extraction at the bathroom so the mirror was damp for a long time after a shower and bathroom is super damped and warm as well. I used my hairdryer and the electric cable kept falling out from the wall. We had 3 layers bedding. loose Sheet/duvet with no protection/loose sheet - I find it not so clean since it's easy to loose the cover sheet when sleeping (I wonder if the non-covert-duvet- get washed every-time a guest leaves?
Cons regarding hotel service: We booked a room with 2 queen beds for 1 night. The next morning I went to the reception to ask for the price for one more night and was told $199. I called them later to confirm that we wanted to stay one more night. At checkout we got a bill $239 a night and I told her that she informed me with another price the day before. She told me that she didn't know what room I was in and the price she told me was for a room with a single bed (that I was not informed). I told her that it was her mistake and I made my choice out of the price she earlier gave me. I asked her to refund me the differences but she refuged. She told me that I could get back to talk with a manager. I asked several times for the managers name and very, very aggressive she wrote the managers name "WILL" on my printed bill. The hotel manager called me later after we checked out and still, she refused to pay me the difference of the price I was told. The hotel is defiantly not very serviceminded!!!
Last, We went dawn to the reception to ask for toilet paper (we ran out since there was just 1 roll), 2 water bottles and new towels (our old towels were used to remove all water on the wet bathroom floor) and when we came back from dinner there was none of the items in our room and both of our keys didn't work...
The elevator was under repair and not in function for the 2 days -we were located on 3th floor. No roomservice because of covid (I totally get that) Parking $15 per night
Overall not a great experience and unfortunately i can't recommend anyone to stay at this hotel (there is plenty of others in downtown and close...
Read moreLet’s start at the beginning. My mistake is that I didn’t read the more recent reviews of the Hotel Santa Barbara and had a similar experience as described by previous guests. I’m sure the hotel manager will issue the standard response, “we so appreciate your feedback regarding your recent stay. Please accept our sincere apology for not meeting your expectations.” The historic queen room was smaller than pictured on the hotel website. It was essentially a cell. The desk was crammed in next to the closet making it hard to open the left side of the closet door. The desk was a child’s desk accompanied by a child’s chair. The chair was not adjustable and too low for the desk making it uncomfortable and difficult to type on a computer. The dresser only had a single draw. For two of us staying for three nights, there was no place to put our clothes, so we had to keep all clothes in our suitcases on the floor because there was no stand for the suitcase. The bathroom was a joke. The single glass panel was useless, and water always splashed on the floor when taking a shower. Any other hotel would use a simple sliding glass door. There was an abundance of towels but only two hooks so close to each other that the towels would not fully dry. The barn door, yes a barn door to the bathroom was impossibly heavy and the little round latch to open was inadequate for the weight of the door and too small for an adult hand/finger to operate. It was a major chore getting in and out of the bathroom. The cold water faucet was installed backwards. The toilet paper holder did not adequately hold the roll of toilet paper so half the time when a sheet was pulled, the roll fell into the trash can. The door to the one working elevator opened outward and would hit you in the head if you stood too close. Fortunately we warned by a hotel staff person to stand back. We were serenaded each night to 10PM-11PM with the music from the State Street bars. The ear piercing fire alarm went off three times the morning of 11/1:, 9:41, 10:04 and 10:12. No explanation provided. On two mornings, there was a loud boom at 6AM which I attributed to possible construction. The only two good attributes of the Hotel Santa Barbara were the friendly and helpful staff and its location on State Street. Our stay with tax was over $1,000 for the three nights and one of the biggest rip-offs I’ve ever encountered in all my years of business travel and of course parking was extra. We were traveling with two other colleagues who also stayed at the hotel in the historic queen room, and when we compared notes fund we had the...
Read moreI wish I would have read the recent reviews prior to booking. My husband and I stayed here in 2022, and loved the experience. When the opportunity arose to treat my daughter and mother-in-law to a celebratory weekend away, I booked the hotel based on my fond memories of the classic luxurious decor, central location and excellent unobtrusive service. ||When we pulled into valet, and were told we couldn't walk through the lobby to the front desk, but had to walk around the block to the front entrance, I realized things were vastly different. Front desk staff was friendly and professional, but they are dealing with a complete building renovation and aesthetic overhaul that was not obvious when booking, and certainly interrupts the service and presentation I was looking forward to. When my daughter needed to use the restroom during check in, we were told to use the restroom adjacent to the parking lot, which ended up being a Port-o-potty. Pretty disappointing considering what we paid for the stay. After check in, we had to walk back around the hotel to the parking lot again, to access the elevators to the rooms from the back of the building (the elevator being what was most likely a freight elevator repurposed to be a temporary guest elevator, shabby and seemingly less than safe). The constant walking back and forth was inconvenient, and proved extra difficult for my mother-in-law who'd recently had knee surgery. To avoid walking outside later at night, we resorted to taking the stairs in the front of the building up to our room on the second floor, which felt particularly unsafe, as the door did not require hotel key card entry from State Street, and allowed easy street access to every floor in the hotel.||All in all....Service is fine. The rooms have been "updated", and lack the beautiful elegance of the past. The crown moulding, damask textiles and upholstered headboards have been replaced. The scaffolding around the outside of the windows are strewn with trash and discarded construction waste. I would not recommend staying here at the very least, until construction is complete. And if you are expecting some iteration of the beautiful classic version of what it used to be,...
