Those who pay attention to my reviews are well aware of the fact that I only do 1-Star & 5-Star reviews. In other words, only places that are so incredible, I want everyone to know...or, so horrible, I want to warn everyone. Unfortunately, Crepissima falls under the latter category. After seeing the 4.8-Star rating, and reading through several of the reviews, I was impressed enough that I felt the place was definitely worth trying. At the same time, being that there was only 116 reviews, I should have taken that 4.8 stars with a grain of salt.
Getting back to this review, to say I was GREATLY disappointed would be a "severe understatement". Initially, I was really looking forward to having crepes for breakfast. However, upon arriving, and seeing the numerous Mexican dishes, as well as the employees working there, I felt confident that ordering chilaquiles was the right thing to do. But, since I still wanted to try their crepes, I also ordered a plain crepe on the side. Lastly, to drink, I ordered one of their house coffee specialties, Cafe de Olla.
Starting with the crepe, just looking at it, I could tell that it was undercooked. Visually, it wasn't dark enough, and it had a 'doughy' appearance. Cutting into it with my fork, my initial thought was confirmed - It was definitely undercooked, and it was definitely 'doughy'. Strike 1.
Next up was the chilaquiles, which I had also ordered with fried eggs, to be cooked "over easy". Upon delivery to my table, I could instantly see that the eggs were severely overcooked. The edges of the eggs were burnt, and the yolk was cooked almost completely solid. If the eggs had arrived "over medium", it would have still been 'badc, but at least there would have been some runniness to the yolks. The eggs I received were not only "over hard", but, again, the edges of the eggs were burnt. Strike 2.
Getting to the rest of the chilaquiles, I should mention that I have had chilaquiles dozens of times, from many different places. Some have been 'outstandingc, while others have been 'good', and others have been 'decent'...but, until today, I have never had any that I could honestly say were 'horrible'. On a 1-10 scale, the worst I can say of any chilaquiles that I have previously had, it would have rated a 3 or 4. This, I would have rated a 1...and, ONLY because '1' is the lowest rating on a 1-10 scale. The best way I can describe what I received would be this - It looks as if they took a bowl, filled it with premade tortilla chips, topped it with 1-2 spoonfuls of cheese, warmed it up slightly in a microwave, poured a half-cup of watered-down salsa Verde on top (I say "watered-down" because at least 90% of it was in the bottom of the bowl), threw on 1-2 spoonfuls of sour cream, and finally topped it with the overcooked eggs. Strike 3.
The only "saving grace" of my entire breakfast was the Cafe de Olla, which was very flavorful. Normally, I'd as 2 packets of sugar to my coffee. With the Cafe de Olla, I only needed 1, and that was perfect.
I have no complaints about the service...but, it also doesn't deserve any compliments. To be completely honest, I don't understand the 4.8-Star average rating. The only thing I can assume is that, possibly, the majority of the previously-left reviews were posted by friends & family of the owner & employees. One thing I can promise - if I am ever back in Valencia (which, I'm sure I will be), and I want breakfast, Crepissima is one place I will NOT go to again. Just because a place has a great atmosphere does not mean it has good (or bad) service, not does it mean the food is good (or even edible). For 'atmosphere', if I could give '6', I would. Likewise, where the food is concerned, if I could give '0', I would.
UPDATE: First, I was NOT upset, irritated, or ANYTHING negative, that the place is room by Mexicans. In fact, QUITE the opposite. As for the cook times supposedly being 'accurate', there is NO way that's possible. Eggs cooked 'over easy' NEVER come with burnt edges, or solid yokes (I pointed this out to the person who brought it...
Read moreThe food was DELICIOUS! We tried several of the menu items, the salad, the dessert, coffee and tea were all very tasty. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
Update, about 4+ months later: We ordered a dozen different empanadas to sample a variety of the flavors. We tried the pepperoni and mozzarella, the ground beef and the Philly steak and cheese. All of them were DELICIOUS and we sampled a few if the sauces offered by the restaurant and they added a lovely enhancement to the delicious flavors of our empanadas. Our coffee was delicious and we enjoyed the Red Velvet crepe as well as the New York Cheesecake crepe, both were delicious compliments to our meal. The Red Velvet was a bit more rich and sweet, but still incredibly delicious. If you're ever in the area, please give them a try, you won't regret it! I know I've said this already, but the SERVICE at this restaurant was INCREDIBLE. The staff were incredibly helpful, willing to answer questions and offered suggestions for items we might like when asked, and they told us which empanadas were most popular that we hadn't tried. Genesis was such a wealth of knowledge about the food and the flavors that would be found in these items, she knew where the items had originated from and why people enjoyed them so much! You will NOT find a better, more knowledgeable, clean and well kept small restaurant and staff anywhere locally! I hope more people will discover this small business, and...
Read moreI'm writing this for my husband as he doesn't have an account. He went to get us some breakfast and we were excited to try this place. He went in and got me a creme brulee. This part went fine, it was a decent crepe. However, he also ordered a Smores one for himself. She asked if it was just one and he assumed she meant just one smores, not that she didn't hear his second order. Simple mistake. When he finally noticed he simply told her he had wanted a Smores one also. It isn't like he was demanding a free crepe or anythig, just the one he wanted and was willing to pay for. It would have been simple to laugh it off or whatever, but instead she got defensive. She made him feel like she found him stupid for making the mistake and came off as very unwelcoming. We won't be coming back. I worked retail and sometimes we make mistakes, it takes minimal effort to just be polite about it. You don't have to take the full blame or anything, but a simple "oh there must have been a miscommunication let me just ring that up for you" would have been nice. If you own a place it helps to not be so defensive and stand offish. Tldr; food was ok,...
