I don't know why anyone who loves truly good and authentic New Mexico food would give this place high ratings!
I love hot green and red chile as I roast my own green and dry my own fresh red. I also grow many varieties of hot chile peppers so I am no wimp to hot chile!
I tasted the level 2 and it was insane but tasted like crap! No good flavor and I highly doubt this is all green chile in it! I think they add a capsaicin extract or something! Totally unpalatable!
I ordered the roast beef enchilada plate and was underwhelmed! They put the wimpy gringo chile on it, (green and red) and as it wasn't terrible tasting is wasn't great either. Pretty bland. The "roast beef that I had to pay extra for was cheap processed pressed meat and not real roast beef! I should have got the ground beef. The posole was gross and the rice was , well, meh. The whole beans were ok. The cheese looked like processed Velveeta.
I only wanted to try it because of Anthony Bourdain's appearance on his show and some of the reviews here! Total crap, I don't know why some locals thinks this is good at all!
Not the best service and definitely a run down hole in the wall.
Garcia's Kitchen in Albuquerque is way better...
Read moreI came here based off a friend's recommendation on my search to find the best green chile. I do not take green chile lightly, I like it spicy and flavorful!
The first time I made the trip to Santa fe the store was closed for renovation, bummer. But it was a fault on my end - I probably should have called ahead in hindsight.
What I was led to understand was there were three levels of chile, and I was oh so excited to try that level 3.
I got there and there was only one other table seated besides us. Still, it took the server quite awhile to even ask us what we wanted to drink (think over 5 minutes) and another 5 minutes to bring out the water. Okay - I'm in no big hurry and have good company. I ordered the 3d burrito with roast beef and green chile, and he runs off without mention of levels of heat or anything else.
I didn't see him again until he brought the food so I couldn't ask about the levels. The burrito was very good, and the chile was flavorful and... Somewhat spicy? But I have to admit I'm a bit disappointed I didn't get this "devil sauce" level 3 spicy.
I'd probably go back again sometime if I'm in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way again. Food was great - service...
Read moreCHECK YOUR RECEIPTS. Shady business practices overcharging customers which is illegal at worst, incompetent at best. This restaurant uses non-itemized handwritten checks. The first time we went we were overcharged $10.00. We did the math, like we always do, before the check came and noticed the total was much more than it should have been. We complained and they recalculated it with the correct price.
The second time we were once again overcharged by $6.00. Today, April 28, I went to the front and mentioned this and the younger woman working the register got super annoyed, took the check and went back to redo her math on the calculator. There was a $6.00 difference. She didn't apologize but instead of checking me out, mumbled something to her coworker and walked away without saying a word.
First time, sure, mistakes happen. Second time? Something is off. They're using their handwritten checks to overcharge people and pocket the money or they have incompetent workers who cannot use a calculator. It wasn't the same people behind the register both times.
With a hand written check, most people won't do their own calculations to be sure the price is correct. Do better...
