Worst ending to and otherwise amazing first trip to the west coast. Waited 15 minutes for open table, "waitress" sat us and got us a third place setting which was needed, then never came back with menus. Couple came in and seated themselves right next to us and were handed menus, same with a group of people that came in after them. After getting up to try to get menus, waitress finally brought them over and told us the kitchen closed in five minutes, then said she would be back in one minute. Different waitress came to table to take order 10 minutes later as she noticed we were looking around for original waitress who we could see standing next to the bar texting on her phone. Orders came seperate, caesar salad was all iceberg lettuce and when waitress was asked about it, just said "oh, sorry" and stood there for a minute and then walked away to go text in her spot. Caesar salad that was supposed to come with steak had to be asked for, which was also all iceberg lettuce. Original waitress came and took a couple of plates we were done with and went back to texting when we were clearly done eating. Second waitress came over and took the rest of the plates and got us our check and ended up taking the caesar salad off the check. Service was horrendous as one "waitress" seemed to rather be on her phone than helping the patrons of the restaurant and the other waitress was trying to do everything and clearly wasnt capable of that. One star for this place is beyond generous for the...

Well the place is small. No one greets you at the door. No one says hi or welcome. Me and my sister drove all the way from Santa Clarita Valley. I made reservations the night before and told them I had a groupon. The groupon is a joke. It shows a steak and Lobster on the plate. It says $25 for $40 worth of steak and fresh seafood for two or more. It gives you the impression that two people get the steak and lobster for $40.00. You can't get one steak and lobster for that. It was my sisters birthday. She had never been to Santa Monica. When we get to the door, there is a sign that says, " Sorry, we only accept Groupons on Sunday-Wednesday" I think. I tried to call them from outside. Phone was ringing and no one was picking up!. I did talk to someone about it and they honored it. The lady bartender was really cool. The waitress didn't give us too much attention. She sat in a corner on her cell phone. When we got to the parking we looked for Valet but no one was there. When we were leaving the place, some guy taps on our window. He says, $5. I said sorry we use the last of cash inside. He said no $5. to park here! We were like what? He points to a sign off to the right of us. Honestly we did not see that sign. There was no one there when we pulled in. The prices were so high. We had our hearts set on The steak and seafood. I let my sister get The steak and Shrimp and I got a salad. The outback has the same Steak and Lobster for $20.00 with free parking! The food is good...

Went there today 2/18/24 When went in was told there was a booth but we could only be seated if we can be in and out in 90 mins. We said sure even though that’s the first time I’ve heard that…

We ordered 2 filets 1 medium, 1 medium rare…. When I say they came out raw. I’m not exaggerating, like they no joke came out completely raw in the inside. And we took bites of that…. We then told them that, and they remade it.

Again the medium rare filet was not raw but pretty bad close. And the Medium filet was overcooked and kind of pully if that makes sense. (Really bad quality fillet) this is my first time leaving a review that’s how bad it was.

They apologized and offered dessert to us but again we just felt uncomfortable because it was cutting the 90 minutes we agreed to and it was honestly horrible.

When the bill came out I’m expecting atleast some sort of compensation for eating raw meat… but was compensated on my $4 sprite (that came out in a can, lol)

So overall got 2 raw steaks. Paid full price. Food was horrible at a bare minimum. Server was very nice. Obviously not his fault. But this definitely has to be one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had. Like again we were served RAW steak. And I’m not exaggerating that. It was literally raw.

Anyways hopefully others have better experiences but I won’t be back

Wish I took pictures to upload but was too busy spitting up the raw meat and being...

Came here for dinner. Staff were welcoming. The place has an earthy casual vibe. They have a wide menu suitable for meat eaters, vegetarians, and vegans. Unfortunately, they had a few food items unavailable. I had beef tacos. They were really good. My friend had a vegan salad and really enjoyed also. I had intended to order more food but when i went to do so, I was informed the kitchen was already closed. This hadn't been communicated by the person who had brought our food and drinks out to us. Although you have to order at the counter rather than a server taking your order at the table no one came out to ask us if we were good or to give us a heads up they were taking last orders, even though id told them i intended to order more. So it was a little disappointing and pretty inconvenient. It was a lost sale to them also, so a case of lose lose. I would come back here again as the food was good, probably for breakfast. Hopefully the service will be better next time.

Looking for the best way to drive across the country? Look up at one of three epic road trips from Chicago to Los Angeles! Feb 2021 Chez Jay was chosen as one of the best places to visit on a road trip by The Wall Streat Journal! 🥜🐘🇺🇸 This American restaurant, the historic landmark (from 2012) that was established in 1959 in Santa Monica on 1657 Ocean Ave. Its Owners did a good job on The Backyard (opened August 2019) where now we all can enjoy brunches on weekends and live music from 7 to 9 pm on Wednesdays. The New brunch menu is fantastic! Chez Jay is one of those special places where beside good drinks and amazing meals especially if you are into seafood and steaks you can get the best of its atmosphere, meet new interesting people and to make new friends. Great service and every person who works there is a good person. You will always feel people care about you and make sure you are happy at Chez Jay!

I had the best time at Chez Jay. It was worth making a reservation and we were seated right on time. It felt like home from the owners warm welcome to the amazing staff it began great and got even better. The bloody Mary was a perfect way to begin. The Calamari steak was just as tender and delicious as I heard. The butter steak was perfectly medium rare and the herb sauce will have you craving it the next morning. The scalloped potatoes made for an excellent side choice with a nice Al dente piece of fresh broccoli. The steak was so delicious I can't stop thinking about it. Good thing there was so much food and fun I brought some home. The parking lot is a nice treat in crazy busy Santa Monica. In a sea of watered down boring spots the food and history of Chez is a welcome classic.
