I've been coming to Urth Melrose since it opened in the mid 90's. It's one of my favorite spots in all of LA, a lot of great memories. It's really disheartening to see such a careless and rude staff. I brought a friend who was visiting from NYC and she loves tea and of course, go to Urth. I had arrived earlier and ordered a pot of Grateful Heart tea as I usually do and took a seat by the fireplace. My friend came in and wasn't sure which tea to get and she had questions for the cashier, the same one who rang me up (wearing a flag of Mexico key necklace). I explained to hear she wants a small pot of whatever tea she points out that she likes but the cashier insisted on just selling her tea by the oz. I explained to her over and over again, my friend wants a warm beverage to join me, not a 1 oz bag of loose tea she can do nothing with. Cashier REFUSED to translate what my friend wanted (remember, this is the first time she stepped foot inside Urth). After the 1 oz of tea was delivered to our table, I waited a few minutes and went back to the cashier to let her know SHE MISUNDERSTOOD (polite way to say refused) to put in the order of what we wanted. My friend was asking a few questions and the cashier was making faces like she was put off by normal customer questions. After I got it straightened out and paid the difference, she came to the table and wordlessly plucked the 1 oz of tea away, not that we needed it but as a gesture she should have just left it alone. My friend thought she was having a really bad day and I agree, but leave it at home.
The other thing that was unpleasant was that all the doors were wide open and it was below 50 degrees. I had a cold and luckily was by the fire. I get the logistical reason for keeping the doors wide open, workers carrying trays of orders, people coming to and fro, but this Urth Caffe used to have a warm, cozy, FRIENDLY atmosphere and at least on Tuesday night January 9th, it did not. Feel free to contact me and tell Shallom/Jilla about this. I remember them when they opened Urth and were working the registers. The...

Read moreFirst time here 9 am Sunday. Ordered a waffle with fruit and they forgot to add the butter on the side. Server said she would bring it and never returned. Had to get up go to the counter and ask for it. By then the waffle was cold and I was given rock hard butter. Everyone seems to be in a rush here. Relaxing atmosphere but not relaxing... Sucks... Waiting for them to remake the waffle. Have to wait all over again. Let's see if they remember the butter... Maybe I will bring my own next time... FYI not everything is organic. saw the milk containers they use to make the coffee drinks altadena but NOT organic... Took photo of my empty table while I wait for the second waffle to be remade... Super lame... Update just got the second waffle and it's dark looks like they just reheated and not remade it OMG..after saying they would remake it and they placed the original fruit that came with the waffle on a plate on the side. The banana was starting to turn brown.. TERRIBLE!! What is all the rave about??? I have to plate my own dish for $20. Bucks... Lol. Where is the wow factor when a beautiful dish arrives warm on your table... FYI points/rewards only for the coffee not the food. Here is a photo of the reheated dark waffle that was brought to my table dark and not light or...
