I was trying to save my 20 pound terrier yesterday from some pitbull/boxer mix dog that weights more than me. No command to “get down” from the owner of the dog. I was screaming on top of my lungs because I was so terrified. This dog wouldn’t get down. The owner is lucky I didn’t call the cops. They would’ve taken her dog from her. I wouldnt suggest this park for small dog owners. City really needs to separate it into two. The problem with some big dogs are not them but the owners who don’t train them well and do not pay attention when they play with other dogs. It’s all fun until someone gets hurt. That dog would’ve broken mine into two just with its weight. Extremely unpleasant and terrifying experience. You shouldn’t own a dog like that if you don’t care enough to train it and be on top of it when you are in public. And the audacity to not even own up to it. Some people.

This is probably the best park around for owners who understand that a dog park is not the equivalent of taking your 14 y/o to the mall. If you pay attention to your dog even as they socialize with other dogs and/or occasionally engage in fetch - this park can be great. It’s not huge and has no grass, but it’s open and flat and doesn’t get as crowded. The size can be tougher for big dogs when there are multiple trying to play ball, but it’s a big benefit if an unruly dog/person comes into the park because your dog is always close by. There’s water and usually tennis balls buried in the dirt and wood chips - which are my dogs favorite smh. All in all this is a decent option for those who don’t risk the ticket by playing by the beach. There’s a water station that can sometimes be gross so bring a bowl if you have one. I recommend going at a late hour to beat the rush.

Its a great park maintained well perfect for bringing your dog to play with, leashes are not needed because it is gated in. There are scoopers to clean up after your dog has done his or her business.

By far my favorite Santa Monica dog park... Manageable size, rarely crowded, relatively clean... There's no separate small dog area, but I like the small/large dog interactions. And we've had fewer run-ins with aggressive dogs here than at Joslyn or Airport dog park. Most of the owners that visit regularly are friendly and congenial. Downside: Not enough benches in the shade, and the barking from the kennel next door can...
