The Chicken Shop — Restaurant in Santee

When I noticed this fried chicken restaurant opened I knew I had to visit. Fried chicken is one of my all time favorite foods. I decided to come in for lunch and grab a 3 piece dark meat combo. I love thighs more than drumsticks so I asked if it could come with 2 thighs and 1 drumstick. The very nice gentlemen told me I could have it however I wanted. That was so awesome! I was told my order would take about 15 minutes, I don't mind waiting for a freshly cooked meal. My order was ready about 15 minutes later. I took my order to go since my son was with me and he wanted something else to eat. So, I ate while I drove. This chicken was so hot, I willingly burnt my fingers to dig in. The chicken was very juicy and very crunchy, i loved the coating but to me, it was lacking flavor. I would love a spicy option. For my two sides I chose hush puppies and onion rings. The hush puppies were good. Nothing special but tasty. The onion rings made me consider giving this restaurant 3 stars. They are not freshly made and taste mostly of breading season with onion powder. There was no real onion in these things. This bummed me out, since onions are cheap and you can get a lot of onion rings from one onion. They already made the batter, it wouldn't be much more effort to make a good onion ring. I would visit again but would ask for some of the wings seasoning on my chicken and definitely not order the onion rings.

Santee is BLESSED to have their one and only location. I have been eating from here since the 6th grade, and the quality and consistency has been the same every time, which is awesome. Easily, some of the best fried chicken I have ever had. The BEST fried chicken in Santee. This is a family owned business, you can literally taste the love in their food. The menu has so many options, without it being too overbearing. The fried chicken always comes out hot and fresh. They offer you this bomb ass hot sauce, which goes amazing with their chicken. The chicken is juicy, crispy, and FLAVORFUL. Literally checking every single box. Portions are amazing, especially for the price. Mind you, the photo of my popcorn chicken is a small. Additionally, the prices here are quite good considering it is family owned, in San Diego, and the quality is out of this world. Their sides are all good, there isn't a single bad side. Ordered some food from here and had someone pick it up for me when I had covid, and I am so deadass it healed me. Talk about comfort food. Came here with my Wife, I ordered the bbq chicken fries and my Wife ordered the popcorn shrimp and Mac n cheese. My chicken seemed like overly frozen pieces of popcorn chicken double fried. The fries were undercooked. My Wife's popcorn shrimp tasted overly fishy and made her feel sick almost immediately. And we tried the Mac n cheese and it tasted like dishwater. Very disappointed when comparing to all the good reviews. I wish we had a better experience... maybe we should've ordered something else?
