PART 2 of prior REVIEW From Jason Parker due to space limitations: After an hour the food came.... I will admit, the chicken LOOKED pretty and it was hot and fresh...but my wife started pointing out that the chicken thighs were absolutely TINY. She said "how is this enough food for a child even?" I tried to again rationalize by saying that us Americans are spoiled by having chicken from KFC that is the size of a turkey, but she was right. The wing I had (yep they brought a wing instead of the thigh I asked for, along with NO ranch and NO spread til I asked again) was teeny, with almost no meat on it. The leg, as my wife joked, looked like a drummette. The breast was half the size of the piece that most normal people would expect. All that waiting for these baby sized pieces? And the cornbread...well to be one of their signature items, and I was anticipating it being wonderful....it left much to be desired...it was dry and as someone else mentioned, I might have wanted plain old Jiffy cornbread instead of this... My son didn't even eat his...so after a disappointing dinner where the only seemingly good thing was my kids at least ate the mac n cheese....we paid the almost $50 bill, and I tipped even if the food certainly didn't warrant it...but I had to find out for myself so I pulled the waiter aside and just straight out asked "my wife is very disappointed that the chicken took so long to be sooo SMALL." and his response was "well, our chicken is natural and organic so it don't have all those chemicals and steroids injected into it".. Well that would be a reasonable excuse, but don't you think in this society we live in where again, us Americans do expect really large chicken pieces, that you would put a sign up front maybe stating that our pieces are going to be smaller than you might expect in other places because they are natural and not enhanced... He said if your wife had told me I could have dropped another piece for her, but really, how were we to know a place would have given a whole other piece for free, and also were we supposed to wait another 45 minutes for it? I felt bad and thought my wife was overreacting, but as we left, we heard two other ladies talking as they got to their car, saying "I never been so unsatisfied as today!" and were talking about the size and wait too.... ON TOP OF ALL THAT, we had noticed two of our fellow church members at the table next to us and it just so happens that the next day at church, the man came up to me and asked "so how did you like that chicken?" and I said "to be honest brother, and I'll use un-Christian words here, but my wife was PISSED". He started to laugh and pulled out his phone to show that he had taken a picture of his chicken thigh with a nickel placed on top of it, the nickel clearly covered up 1/4 of the thigh! He had the same complaints as us, but he said He DID ask for an extra piece of chicken and the server brought him a leg...which he ALSO used the exact words, "it looked like a drummette, not a leg". SO my wife was elated to find someone of like mind...and while we are white, the friends were black people, so this isn't just a group of whites colluding to give bad review to a black owned restaurant...the 2 ladies that were talking bad were black too... I really had high hopes for this place and again I guess the reviewer who called them the best chicken in town must have ONLY considered taste and crispiness because those portion sizes won't feed a 10 year old, much less a 230 lb man! OR my 112 lb wife! I'd give them another chance but my wife won't... OH and my wife loves Oxtails, but she kinda scoffed at the price quoted to us $39.95 for one plate? you gotta do...
Read moreSo, for the first time ever I had to go home and really ponder on a restaurant. I understand and empathize with some things that most people do not when it comes to restaurants because it's my passion as well.
Anyways, also for the first time ever I knew what I wanted to order before I walked in (I've been contemplating on coming here for a month now). Unfortunately the server tripped as soon as the gun sounded to start the race and I knew it would be a uphill battle. We had a 10-15 minute wait once we were seated, she forgot the drink order and had to come back and ask then still got it wrong (I didn't complain) tables were sat after us and because she was behind the guy at the front counter came to help her. Unfortunately he took the orders of two tables that came in after us and then didn't even come to our table instead he went back to the front to help the other customers (I didn't complain too much but I did go up there and mention it to him politely).
There were problems with the payment machine as well and that held time for hostage. Honestly I wasn't upset I just saw simple things that could've been done to make this operation move more smoothly so I was wishing that I had my apron. I kept telling my friend (and reassuring myself) that the food would be worth it in the end.
I ordered the two piece, dark meat $8.99 that comes with a mini loaf of your choice and a small side. I also added on a side of Yama $4.75 and a side of greens $4.99 (the price of the sides were a little shocking). I got the sweet tea as well and it was easy like Sunday morning :-) In all honesty the chicken was some of the best I've ever had at a restaurant, it was juicy while it was hot, when it cooled down and after I microwaved it. You can honestly taste the love in this chicken all the way to the seasoned bone! Greens are always my favorite side but I always get Mac and yams as well because I believe that all three combined make the perfect bite. This is the first time that the yams were a favorite of mine, they were perfect. The greens weren't bad especially after mixing it with the cornbread/spice and the Mac fell short for me but once I ate them all together I was in food Heaven none the less.
There's a reason why it's called Geneva's Famous Chicken and Cornbread. The chicken will have you coming back for sure! I'm sorry for the long review but I've thought about Geneva's Chicken everyday since I had it, all of the problems before the food came vanished and I will be back this week to get it again (and to try the pound cake because I was too full...
