Oh boy, where do we even start with Uncle June's? This place is a total gem! The moment we walked in, we knew we were in for something special. The ambiance, the friendly faces, the smell of freshly made sandwiches—everything just screamed "welcome home."
Now, let’s talk about the food because, oh my goodness, it’s absolutely DELICIOUS! Every bite was a flavor explosion, but the true star of the show was the Eggplant Sandwich with Pepper Jelly. Seriously, who knew eggplant could taste this good? The pepper jelly added just the right amount of zing to make my taste buds dance with joy. It’s the kind of sandwich that makes you want to do a happy dance in your seat.
And the team at Uncle June's? They’re nothing short of amazing. The service was impeccable—warm, welcoming, and attentive without being overbearing. They made sure we had everything we needed and even shared a few laughs along the way. It’s clear that they love what they do, and it shows in every aspect of the experience.
As Uncle June himself wisely said, "You steer the ship the best you know. Sometimes it's smooth, sometimes you hit the rocks. In the meantime, you find your pleasures where you can." Well, We have found my pleasure at Uncle June’s, and it’s a smooth, delicious sail with every bite.
If you haven't been to Uncle June's yet, do yourself a favor and go. Your stomach (and your soul)...
Read moreEven with late-stage dementia and a bullet in the head, Uncle June would not eat an Italian cold cut hero on a store-bought sesame-seed hamburger bun. If you're hoping for a Jersey-style real Italian hero keep walking, this was almost inedible. Unfortunately, the pork-belly sandwich was actually inedible and this ordered by a pork belly fanatic. Pork belly is supposed to be fat (up to 85%) but what makes pork belly good pork belly is the alternating layers of meat and fat that ultimately renders during the long and slow low-heat cook resulting in a crispy yet soft chewy texture. Not this one: gristly, fibrous, ropy and sinewy were the sad adjectives of the day. We were really disappointed. Poor quality burger buns and prepackaged Texas toast is not a sign of excellence, but something to be concerned about. We saw some really positive reviews and were hoping for the best. Finding a decent Deli-sandwich shop down South is like finding a needle in a haystack. The best you're going to do in Savannah- sandwich wise, is Rocky's NY Deli & Italian- 7360 Skidaway Rd, which is still not up to par with any great NYC or Jersey sandwich shop. Head over to Ukiyo - in the Starland District, 224 Bull Street for some decent pork belly buns. It's just a hop, skip and a jump from the Starland Yard...
Read moreUncle June’s at Starland Yard was a first for me, and I walked away with one unexpected takeaway: this sandwich was too big. I know that’s not something commonly said, but hear me out. I got the ham and pimento cheese sandwich with buffalo cucumbers on the side, and while the flavors were solid (the pimento cheese slapped), the sheer height of the sandwich made it hard to fully enjoy. It was just… a lot. A structural challenge, if you will.
That aside, the experience was great. The staff was super accommodating, and Starland Yard has an easy, cozy vibe—especially on a weekday. I’d been before on a weekend, and the energy is completely different.
Next time, I’d probably go for something a little easier to tackle, but overall, a solid spot with good food and a...
