I've been coming here for 6+ years and ordered take-out and dined-in every day of the week over that time. They used to have two locations: this location and another at Shea and FLW. Many of the negative reviews are based on accidental orders at the wrong location, or the time it takes to make the food. Al Hamra closed the 2nd location on Shea during Covid, so there's now no confusion about location. Additionally, it takes time to make Indian food. Each dish is made fresh, cooked in an authentic Tandoor, which is where the "Tandoori" comes from in Chicken Tandoori. There is nowhere East of the 51 that does this. This provides authentic Indian. The shop has toned down the food to Americanised the food a little, but it's still amazing.
It took me four year and 10's of horrendous experiences at other "Indian" restaurants to finally find a good restaurant.
Al Hamra is the best you'll find in AZ. I live 1/2 a mile from the restaurant and ordered 100's of meals and never been disappointed.
The negative reviews are based on the time it takes to make the food, or customers ordering from the wrong location. Something you can't blame the restaurant for. Each dish is prepared at the time you order, which guarantees freshness. This isn't a quick in-and-out restaurant like many places in the US. If you understand Indian food, you know that they add 10's of spices and time to make each custom dish/order.
It takes 45 mins for a take-out to be ready, and 30 ish mins if ordering in. They're not trying to turn tables like many places, they put the quality of the food first, which is excellent.
You can choose a spice level from 1-10. The dish size is perfect for one. My partner and I order 3 dishes and share and we still have a meal for one left afterwards. The food is just as good the next day.
The reason the service might take a while is that each server often needs to explain what Indian food is for novices. The explanation of Indian food provided by Sarah is impeccable.
The Korma, or Tikka is the way forward. The Naan bread is the best in town. If you dine in the Naan is second to none. Many Indian restaurants in town simply don't know how to make a good Naan.
The restaurant is large and is never too crowded as many order take-out. You'll get very personalized serving.
Just remember that each dish is prepared for you at the time of ordering, so it takes time to make. Don't listen to the stupid reviews of people complaining about the time it takes to make, they simply don't understand what makes Indian food great.
Thursday night the owner is there and cooks which is the best day to go. Don't get me wrong the food is exceptional every day/night of the week, but even better Thursday.
Enjoy, you won't be...
Ā Ā Ā Read morePlease read all to understand about proper Indian food, Indian food canāt be made by non Indian proper cook. They are giving bad name to Indian food, So a person develops a taste which is not real Indian food. We were looking for good Indian restaurant, we found this Royal Indian restaurant after reading the reviews we decided to go there. I explained to the waiter in our own Punjabi language that we want proper Indian food not made for local customers. We know Indian food very well as we have been running Indian restaurants in west London for last 54 years. We were the only table of 4 people, we ordered the following dishes. Butter Chicken: was made with diced chicken cubes, with red colour sauce, Lamb saag: very bland hardly any taste. Saag paneer: was ok but as it should be Yellow Dal: very bland No terka (those who donāt know terka it is made with onions, tomatoes, fresh coriander and green chillies fried with lots of butter and poured over dal) Bhindi (which is known as lady finger) We also had Nan, Parantha and veg biryan. I spoke to the owner Mr Kulwant about the food served, he said this how people like it I told but it is not like proper Indian food dispite telling the waiter that we wanted proper Indian food, their cook is Spanish then I understood the problem with food. More over the owner should have realised his mistake serving tasteless food to Indian customers, he was quite rude on the phone instead of being apologetic. Please do your proper research if you are going for Indian food in US. I can say out of India best Indian food you...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI placed my order on line and realized that I ordered form the wrong Al Hamra. I am closer to the AL Hamra on Via Linda. I called and told the person that I had just placed the order and that I needed to cancel. They said they would not make the food but I needed to cancel the order through postmates. I was confused because it was a pick up order and I thought I was placing the online order form Al Harmra. In any case I got a text message form postmates that said my order had been place but they had a help menu to cancel your order. I canceled the order 2 minutes after it had been placed. Next day I got the charge on my card. I called postmates and they told me the order was shown complete and picked up, When I called AL Hamra they said that postmates did not cancel the order and they went ahead and made the food. I asked what happened to the food and they said it was thrown away in the trash. Why they would not call me and let me know they were going to trash the food if I did not come to pick it up is crazy to me. In any event I will dispute the charge through my credit...
