I'm thrilled to share my exceptional experience at SugarJam The Southern Kitchen, the ultimate brunch destination in town. This vibrant spot is a must-visit for anyone looking for a delicious and lively brunch experience. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by the infectious energy of the live DJ spinning tracks from FAMU sports and the bustling crowd of HBCU alumni and enthusiasts.
The Food: The menu at SugarJam The Southern Kitchen is a love letter to Southern cuisine, with a wide variety of breakfast options that cater to all tastes and dietary preferences. I opted for the veggie omelet, which was cooked to perfection and made exactly to my liking - well done and fluffy. The omelet was a masterclass in texture and flavor, with a perfect balance of sautéed vegetables and melted cheese.
But what really sets SugarJam apart is its commitment to traditional Southern cuisine. The grits, for example, are a staple of Southern breakfast cuisine, and SugarJam's version is on point. Creamy, rich, and perfectly seasoned, the grits are a must-try for anyone looking for an authentic Southern breakfast experience. My only gripe is that I wish they offered a bigger option - a cup or bowl would be perfect for those of us who can't get enough of this delicious dish.
The Drinks: The Mimosas at SugarJam are a highlight of the brunch experience. With a variety of flavors to choose from, including pomegranate, orange, and cranberry, there's something for everyone. While my wife wasn't a fan of the pomegranate Mimosas, she loved the value of getting three options for the price of one - a deal that's hard to find in NYC.
The Atmosphere: The atmosphere at SugarJam is electric, with a live DJ spinning tracks and a bustling crowd of HBCU alumni and brunch enthusiasts. The venue is perfect for a fun and lively brunch with friends or a special occasion. The HBCU footprint is evident throughout the venue, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel like you're part of a community.
The Service: The service at SugarJam is top-notch, with friendly and attentive staff who are happy to accommodate your every need. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with a smile and shown to our table. Our server was knowledgeable and helpful, answering all our questions about the menu and making recommendations.
The Verdict: SugarJam The Southern Kitchen is a must-visit for anyone looking for a delicious and lively brunch experience. With its wide variety of breakfast options, delicious Mimosas, and electric atmosphere, this spot is the perfect destination for a fun and memorable brunch with friends or a special occasion. Don't miss out on the opportunity to experience the best brunch in town - make a reservation, get there early, or grab a seat at the bar to avoid the wait.

Read moreI don't usually do reviews, but I felt this was needed. BUYERS BEWARE! THE OWNER IS CHARGING AN ADDITIONAL 2.00 TO YOUR MEAL IF YOU ORDER ANY MEALS WITH EGGS. THEY STATE ITS BECAUSE OF INFLATION. I TOLD THE WAITER AND MANAGER THAT I WOULD JUST LIKE MY MEAL DISCOUNTED AS I DO NOT WANT EGGS ANYWAY. THEY REFUSED AND TOLD ME THAT I WOULD BE CHARGED FOR THEM ANYWAY. SO I SAID JUST GIVE ME THE DARN EGGS THEN AND SCRAMBLED SOFT. THEY BROUGHT THE EGGS.AND THEY WERE NOT COOKED RIGHT. I THEN TASTED THE EGGS AND REALIZED THEY WERE POWDERED EGGS AND NOT FRESH. I TOLD THE WAITER AND SHE SAID WE MIX POWDERED AND REAL EGGS. I THEN TOLD HER WELL WHY ARE YOU CHARGING MORE THEN AND CLAIMING INFLATION. I ASKED FOR A MANAGER AND SHE CAME OVER AND LIED ABOUT THEM BEING POWDERED UNTIL I TOLD HE WHAT THE WAITER SAID AND ASKED THEM TO BOX UP THE EGGS SO I CAN HAVE THEM TESTED. SHE THEM IMMEDIATELY REFUNDED ME AND APOLOGIZED. THIS RESTAURANT IS TRYING TO CON AND COVER UP FOOD INGREDIENTS. NO ONE IN THE RESTAURANT FINISHED THEIR EGGS THAT DAY. I THEN WAS FORCED TO PAY A 20.00 GRATUITY FOR A SERVER THAT WAS MISSING THROUGHOUT MY ENTIRE MEAL AND NEVER CAME AND CHECKED ON ME AFTER RECEIVING THE DARN MEAL AFTER QUESTIONING THE EGG UP CHARGE. AFTER THIS REVIEW AND I DO NOT GET MY MONEY BACK AND HEAR BACK FROM OWNER, I WILL TAKE THESE NASTY EGGS TO BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU WITH MY CONSUMER COMPLAINT.. ALSO ALL THE FOOD WAS NASTY EXCEPT THE BISCUITS. CATFISH OVER COOKED WITH OLD OIL, BRISKET WAS GOOD BUT GIVEN VERY LITTLE, CRAB BALL NASTY AND WAS ORDERED FROM FROZEN FOOD COMPANY, DRINKS WAY OVER PRICED AND FOOD WAS BLAND WITH NO CREOLE SEASONINGS ON IT. OWNER NEEDS TO MANAGE LOCATION BETTER AND ADDRESS CONCERNS. OWNER IS TRYING TO SAVE A DOLLAR WHICH IS RUINING FOOD QUALITY. WAITERS DO NOT KEEP THEM SELVES UP AND LACK PROFESSIONALISM. AFTER WE ATE ME AND SEVERAL OTHER GUESTS HUNG AROUND TALKING ABOUT THE FOOD AND SERVICE AND NO ONE WAS HAPPY. BY THE LOOK OF OWNERS RESPONSE TO REVIEWS SHE LACKS TACT AND DIPLOMACY AND DOES NOT HAVE GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS. ALL IN ALL MY LIP SWELT UP FROM INGREDIENTS IN...
Read moreLet me just start by saying the address that the address on Google (Redfield) is their old address. This created a lot of confusion for me and I nearly gave up but another couple seemed to be sent to this location as well and we soon found out that this address was wrong and we were directed to the new address by a kind woman who just so happened to be around that office space on a Sunday. I followed this nice couple to the new location and once we arrived, my first impression was "crowded", but what did I expect on a Sunday?
We walk in, the couple gets seated at the bar as it is first-come-first-serve (per the hostess's words) and once it is our turn to come up to the podium, she said "sorry, theres no room at the bar. Would you like to sit on the patio?" It was 100 degrees out there, no thank you! We have a seat and wait for the bar to open (there were tables open, but those were for reservations). We finally get seated once two chairs open up at the bar and we are sitting next to our new friends (the kind couple from earlier) when, suddenly, a man comes up to us and asks my friend and I to move as "he made a reservation for these chairs". Um....what? I thought these were first-come-first-serve? We did not move and continued chatting with our new friends, but it was a strange interaction for sure.
The best part, I swear there was a man (I'm not sure it was the same one from earlier) standing eerily still on my left leaning against the window just waiting for us to leave. I swear he was like...watching us. And why us? We were just trying to enjoy brunch with friends. What did we do wrong? We waited our turn just like everyone else.
The only saving grace to this whole ordeal was the food. It came out fast and tasted amazing! I got the vegan hash (left) and my friend got the catfish (right).
Sorry for the long review. I enjoy leaving reviews for restaurants that I visit and I had a lot to say about this one.
Edit: thank you for your response, SugarJam! I got the address wrong, i corrected it 🙂 i'd still give this place another chance. The food was out...
