TLDR Review: With the blend of Japanese and French influences, the place does a great job delivering memorable pastries with good service and good prices. However, it is slightly more expensive than other bakeries nearby (i.e. Piece of Cake, Cake House). Usually around 2-4 dollars per pastry. Cakes may be different (forgot prices) -Recommendations: Curry Bun, Crunchy and Creamy Bun. Detailed Review: This review is based off of 4 categories. Food, Service, Atmosphere, and Cleanliness. The stars are divided among these categories and weighed more heavily on FOOD. This will hopefully help people understand why the place is good at and why I rate the # of stars.
Food is rated out of 4 main grades with the total . Unacceptable (0 stars) , Not Good (.5) , Fair (1) , Great (2 stars-Max given))
The other categories are graded by 3 levels. Max 1 star for each category. Unacceptable (0 stars) , Fair/Good (.5), Great (1 stars-Max given))
FOOD (1.75 out of 2 stars) -For the style of the pastries and appearance, they are expected to be priced higher than other bakeries around the area. For example, $3 for Curry bun (popular). -The custard for some of the buns are much more softer with a different and distinct taste than the ones I tried at places like Cake House and Piece of Cake. -A lot more western pastries like croissants and such than the surrounding bakeries
ATMOSPHERE (1 out of 1 stars) -For the size of the bakery (literally the corner of the block), it does well in creating a cozy atmosphere. Good if you go by yourself/date. Not so good if you bring 4 or more people while people are inside.
SERVICE (.5 out of 1 star) -Polite and quick -Not as personal experience as I have had with other bakeries. (not a bad thing
CLEANLINESS: (1 out of 1 star) -Very clean (when I visted) -Patrons are expected to clean after themselves (please do. don't be rude. There is not waiter waiting for you to...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMy sister in law chose this place for a quick morning snack. It was all new to us and we were from out of town, Vancouver, Canada.
Located in the international district, at first glance the store doesnāt look like much and the door is blocked up with a wooden board. You canāt go inside. Itās a takeout place only. I think I can understand its concept. This part of town looks a bit rough around the edges. But we could care less. We are here to judge the food instead. We were also told by local patrons that itās normal for a line up this early any day of the week.
We ordered a few items to start off. My personal favourite so far is the Japanese curry beef bun. Loved the layers of texture. Crunch on the outside, followed by a pillow layer of the bun on the inside, and the center filling which is the star of the show. Man these can be deadly. I could eat 6 of them. You can also ask for them to be warmed if you didnāt know.
Primarily if itās your first time here, they are known for their malasada. Definitely get one of these.
As for price⦠well⦠Itās on the high side. If your Canadian like me add another 40% to your items, thatās what your paying. But thatās not my complaint. My only complaint is that they posted a sign for their drinks with prices⦠but they donāt post prices for their pastries? Whatās...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreFYI: I came to Fuji because an employee of another bakery recommended this one. Just saying... Food: I had a plain croissant, a doughnut, and a pear, custard, and pastry delight thing. The donuts are sold in orders of 4, not individually. All were rich, and not oily or fatty, not overly sweet either. The pastries were delicious. Service: The young man forgot to include a raspberry/lemon curd pastry i ordered as well, and was charged for. The only reason I gave a 3 on service. The customer looks at available pastries from outside the store through a window. The employee then packs your order and you pay at the window. Its not self service. Getting your order packed is a service they provide. So... But easy remedy, next time I'll check the bag before leaving, not in the Uber, on the way home.
Atmosphere is great. Beautiful Chinatown. There's an awesome plaza/park across the street. Asian staples like lanterns adorning the overhead, ping pong tables always full, benches with game boards in laid, and communal/social interaction. Love it. You can easily walk across the street and enjoy those pastries there. And this gem is right next door to A+ Hong Kong restaurant...
