Exploring Seattle's Chinatown: Eating and Sightseeing Like a True Tourist

Gan Bei is one of my favorite bar/food spots for mid-tier ($$) Cantonese food in the ID. Location is on the smaller side about 7 tables with two that can fit 4+ ppl in addition to counter spots at the bar. Its normally not too crowded if you get there before 6 or 7pm or quickly after a stadium event. My favs are the spicy wonton in chili oil (not pictured) and the mandarin breeze cocktail (a nice black tea, fruity/floral drink that's not too sweet). The shredded chicken and ong choy are marketprice but also very good! Unfortunately didn't snag a pic. On a previous occasion got the fried rice and sticky rice clay pot.

Ganbei is intimate, cozy, and casual in the fullest sense of the word - with old school chalkboards detailing off menu items and rotating daily specials, it feels less like a bar you visit to celebrate and more like the local's watering hole. The drinks are well priced, with "well" being the key word; come on Wednesdays for their well mixes and add on some popcorn chicken for a chill and cheap evening. Their specials rotate every day, and be sure to look around for some off menu items written in nooks and crannies. Seriously though, get their popcorn chicken.

The number one thing that you should know is that I caught the waiter raising the price of the items on our check a dollar more each than what they were listed for on the menu. This is already an expensive place considering the quality of the food, which I have to say is quite lacking. I can't believe this place even has a 4.6 star rating. The beef brisket was hard to chew and had very little flavor. The clay pot is mostly rice very small sausage chopped up on top. Speaking of rice when I asked how much extra it would be for rice (with the brisket) I was told completely a different price by the same guy who proceeded to charge me five times what he told me it would be. The wonton soup was all right I suppose. As for the service the waiter was kind of rude, he did that thing some servers do where their a lot nicer when they know you're about to pay... I hate that especially having been a former server back in the day. He rarely checked the table, it took forever for our food to come out. Meanwhile he's sitting at a table across from us enjoying his own food, in plain sight. This place is terrible I'll never go back! There's no need for excuses such as being understaffed, you overcharged me and you know you overcharged me. If you're under staffed hire more people, If you want to raise the prices update your menu, you might want to raise the quality of your food too considering what you're charging. These are common sense things, such as don't eat in front of customers who are waiting for their food when you are their waiter.

Not the...

I've been there twice and it's absolutely pleasant experiences. Staff are super friendly. People sitting at the bar are chill and seem to know the staff well.

The food is absolutely great. I ordered the yellow curry fried noodles (黄咖喱炒面), hand-shredded chicken(手撕鸡), mini rice rolls (虾米肠粉), clay pot eel rice (鳝鱼煲仔饭) and stir-fried veggies (炒通菜). Every single dish is delicious. Even my boyfriend, who's a non-Asian eater, liked them a lot. You can clearly tell the material they're using is fresh. The cooking is very well-done. I'm not a Cantonese but I can still tell the effort they put into hand-shredded chicken, to make the chicken skin juicy, soft and taste like jelly. This place is the only place I found so far in Seattle that has eel rice, and taste so delicious.

I highly recommend this place to anyone who's interested Chinese, especially Cantonese food. It was a surprise to me why it's not crowded already, given the quality...

It is not hard to find good,. interesting food in the ID. What is very hard, almost impossible, to find is a place with character, charm, and genuinely good service. Gan Bei is the epitome of all of these things.

The signature style bar in Seattle is tiny, and this spot def falls into that. About 8 barstools, 3 tables in the front, and another 2 in a small back room, this is the definition of cozy.

Didn't try any cocktails, but there are a couple drafts; local and the obligatory Sapporo, but they have Steigl Earlier so I will always have a go to beverage.

First time I tried the wings, the wontons in chili oil, and the crispy rice noodles. All were solid, and the wontons were great! Finally a place that gives the proper amount of chili oil (it should look like soup).

Def will be back to try the specialty fried chicken and gravy. They look to have some sold specials daily; switching from drink to food...
