I went to King Noodle during the Seattle Original Night Market in Chinatown. We stopped by because the display of ramen bowls and dumplings in the window caught our attention. It’s a small hole-in-the-wall spot, and it was fairly busy when we entered.
My partner and I weren’t greeted by a single staff member. We saw an empty table across the room, but instead of welcoming us, the server simply pointed for seat here. Once we sat down, he slid menus across the table with pens. The menu itself wasn’t very clear — descriptions of the items were vague — so it took us a while to figure out what to order. From the start, we already felt unwelcome and judged by both the server and a group of people nearby.
My partner is Black and Japanese, and I’m Indigenous and Hispanic. We’re also queer and visibly queer. From the constant stares, the giggling from a nearby table, and the silent treatment from the server, it was hard not to feel like we were being judged for who we are.
When our food started arriving, I went to the self-serve station for soy sauce, chili, Sriracha, vinegar, and small to-go packets. It was crowded, and I kept having to move out of the server’s way, apologizing and saying “excuse me” multiple times.
The dishes came out one by one, hot and visually appealing, but unfortunately they lacked flavor. The soup broth wasn’t hot enough and was bland, the chicken base was weak, and the dumplings were mediocre. We tried to keep eating, but with each dish, our discomfort grew — the stares, the judgmental atmosphere, and the silence from the server made it unbearable.
When my ramen bowl finally arrived, I tried a couple of bites before reaching for my soda. The bottle fizzed over suddenly, spilling everywhere — on me, the table, and the floor. I felt embarrassed, especially as the girls sitting across from us giggled. I tried to get the server’s attention, but eventually had to stand up to ask for napkins or a mop. I didn’t mind helping clean up since he was busy, but he said nothing and handed me only a small handful of napkins before mopping part of the floor. He only cleaned the area near the other customers, leaving the puddle under our table. My partner even had to lift their chair out of the mess. To make matters worse, I’m pretty sure the server didn’t wash his hands after using the mop.
By this point, my partner and I just wanted to leave. Between the constant stares, giggles, silence, rushed service, bland food, and now sitting in a puddle, we were completely drained. My partner asked for boxes to pack up the food, and although we were given containers, we had to ask again later for a bag. We paid and left, feeling awful.
Once we got home, our stomachs started hurting. I checked the pork dumplings we had eaten and discovered they were completely pink and raw inside. That was the final straw.
This experience was traumatizing — we wanted to cry. Now we’re dealing with possible food poisoning on top of everything else, and we both have work tomorrow. We’ll be asking for a refund, because nothing about this experience was worth our hard-earned money. Raw, undercooked dumplings, watery broth, and the lowest level of customer service — I will...
Read moreI’m a personal Chef that just moved to Chinatown on Tuesday 2/20. There was a celebration today 2/24 and I thought it would be nice to get some noodles on my way home. I googled “Best Noodles” near where I live which is 2 blocks away. 4 restaurants came up. Gourmet Noodle Bowl, King Noodle, Jufen Noodle House, and Mike’s Noodles. I was on foot and on King Street which has Mike’s and King’s. Mike’s has (982) reviews and 4.3 stars and King’s has (520) 4.2 stars. Normally I would go where there are more reviews so Mike’s but I was on King’s side of the street so I choose them. WHAT A HUGE MISTAKE! When I walked in there was a lady on her phone texting or whatever and NEVER looked up to say hi, welcome in, are you dining in or carry out? I should have turned around at that point and walked out! But I’m hungry, tired, and was already there. I grabbed a menu and looked at it for about 5 minutes because I make noodles myself and thought about what I would try that’s different from what I make. I choose Szechuan Style Beef and according to the menu it says “Mixed Noodles (with soup on the side) $12.49. I told women I was ready to order and she then asked if I was dining in or taking out. I said take out. It’s super cold in Seattle today this just happened about 25 minutes ago and it’s 6:18 PM and temperature is 49°. Soup with my noodles sounds PERFECT. I place the order she says nothing else, some guy takes my debit card and charges me 14.32 and I rounded it to 16.00. I didn’t leave much because I wasn’t dining in. A few minutes later he hands me a bag and I walk out the door. I got 10 steps out and thought “my bad sure was light” so I turned around and went back inside grabbed a menu to make sure I wasn’t crazy or dumb. It says (with soup in the side) $12.49. So I ask him where the soup was. That’s when this woman takes herself off MUTE and says “Only soup if you dine in.” So I asked guy for my credit card slip back and scratched out the tip and rewrote 14.32 and I asked her where does it said that on the menu or in the restaurant. She said, “We don’t have it on anything.” I then said, “You are being selfish, cheap, or Lazy! I really wanted the soup and you could have put it in a TO-GO container!” I did not give them ANY time to reply I left and will NEVER come back! I’m going to contact Wells Fargo and dispute 5.00 of the 14.32 because I WANTED what they advertised SOUP ON THE SIDE! Wells Fargo is good about disputes and I will get 5.00 charged back! It’s NOT THE MONEY it’s the principle. Also, look at the photo…no soy sauce, the container wasn’t even filled with the noodles, and there were way more noodles to meat ratio👎🏾!
We the CUSTOMERS are tired of YOU restaurants being PETTY! You should have offered me the Soup, or just given it to me! I should have gone to Mike’s! Next time a customer walks in the door lady get your face out of your phone and look up! RUDE!
(misleading restaurant don’t order takeout from here…better yet don’t even go here!)
Read moreNOT VEGETARIAN FRIENDLY My school was on a field trip and we wanted to stop for lunch, so our teacher chose King Noodle. I walked in and saw that the food safety inspection was "Okay" and that made me wonder if the food would get me sick! As my vegetarian friends and I looked at the menu, we could see almost no vegetarian options and resorted to plain rice noodles. Our water was delivered quickly and the server was great, except they could not give me plain rice noodles! I ended up having to order rice noodles WITH bone broth which I was very unhappy with. It tasted fine though. It was unclear to me if the spicy broth was vegetarian or not, but one of my friends ordered it. My other vegetarian friend ended up ordering nothing because it was overwhelming to find vegetarian options. My other non vegetarian classmates said the dumplings were so good though, and that there were lots of options. Even worse (which is why I'm giving 2 stars not 3) I saw no signs of advertising that their meat was ethically sourced, which means it was probably factory farmed! 😭 I highly do NOT recommend this place for anyone who is vegetarian or vegan unless you don't mind bone broth. I also did not get food poisoning, but I was uncomfortable about the food safety...
