Shhh...best kept secret in Ballard. Fills 24th Street with a wonderful aroma of fresh baked bread ...daring you not to take a peek inside to see what’s baking! Tall Grass has many faithful patrons that are local to Seattle because let's face it: all our best intentions to make bread on a regular basis don't always materialize. We often don't like what ingredients are in nearly all the bread at the store and it is priced nearly or the same as fresh bread. The best efforts by the stores to shelve bread that imitates fresh is too often going stale and a disappointment. Tall grass is small batch and good variety of different breads to pair with a variety of meals so whether you are in Ballard for the Market, or visiting Golden Gardens; head north on 24th from Market street, it is an unpretentious " 'stands the test of time' landmark exterior" located on the left by Besalu . Oh...nearly forgot, SOMETIMES other sweeter foods available like scones and cinnamon rolls available but the amount varies based on those that come before you so if you have you heart set on something!!! Order it ahead! Sesame twists and pretzels (seeded in the summer) that are made around 11:00 -12:00.... Oh yes, baking goes on throughout the morning...you may like something so well, you find yourself scheduling your errands across the street or spring walks at the local parks around the time it is being freshly baked...
Read moreSmall but cute local bakery with reasonably priced, real bread, which makes it a rare gem in Seattle. There are many healthy whole grain, whole wheat, and/or sourdough options and many are vegan friendly. The bottom of some bread can be a little burnt, and the rye breads are pretty tough to chew, but I don’t mind that as I understand that’s a small price to pay to enjoy bread that’s less processed.
My only critique of the bakery is that I found the employees always treat me with an aloof, and sometimes condescending attitude because of my Asian appearance, making me feel unwelcome. Last time I was there, the senior lady running the register was chatting so warmly and enthusiastically with the Caucasian women before me, but once it was my turn, her disposition quickly turned cold, which made my heart sink a little. When I asked questions about the ingredients (since I had been pretty health conscious and wanted to know what went into my food), the tone/way she explained it felt mildly but noticeably patronizing and impatient, as if I don’t understand English or I know nothing about baked goods. It’s a shame that I had multiple experiences like this, especially seeing many others mentioning how they were greeted with warmth and delight. I really want to come back for the bread, but don’t feel excited about the treatment I...

I stopped by Cafe Besalu next door and some really lovely whiffs of carbs drifted through the air. I simply had no choice but to follow the smell and promptly landed on the doorstep of Tall Grass Bakery.
I have had no regrets since.
Their baguettes, dinner rolls, and sourdough bread were the BEST I have ever had in my life. They killed it. Super fluffy on the inside and the crust was just to die for. Even after I have had a full meal and some desserts, I still manage to fit in two dinner rolls because it's THAT good.
The granola was absolutely delicious and fresh as well; glad I no longer have to buy the subpar processed ones from the grocery stores.
Their payment system was SO prompt and not filled with time-wasting BS. You tell them your order, they grab the bread, you pay with a card, and BAM. Done. No contact necessary during these trying COVID times. No prompts for tips. The receipt is sent to your email address. You're literally in and out within a minute.
Such a big fan of this place. Will definitely hit it up every weekend for...
