The traditional idea of this place is similar, but the people and the food have changed over the years. Value for you buck is about 65%.
1.)Chicken can be dry if it is BBQ and picked up later in the evening. Poultry will do that if you overcook it or it sits around too long. Timing is even more important with chicken. Pork is safer. Beef can be dry too depending. The later in the day you arrive, the more likely this dryness will occur. If it's busy, the food can easily dry out on the grill. The other extreme is under-cooked, so pick your battles if you get dry meat.
2.) The cabage is essentially the same as it was years sgo. Water, rice vinegar, and crunchy cabbage, Don't consume it if you don't like raw cabbage. This side scope of cabbage is a pallet cleanser and a digestive aid, not a side of mash potatoes!
3.) The sauce can be rather sweet and thinner in consistency. Some Japanese and Korean dishes don't use the thicker Americanized sweet syrup that you might expect from a chain restaurant or a national brand.
4.) Unless you actually ask how much 'extra meat' really is and how much meat is given in a standard portion, don't order it. How would anyone really even know unless you have dined there before? Speak up and ask, don't play victim until you have done your own due diligence. Investigate, don't assume. Use common sense and know where your money is going.
5.) I would return here if I have the time and the hankering for this food. I used to eat here often years ago. It's not the worst food, but it's not the best of you are hangry or expecting Panda Express like foods. The earlier the better chance at getting much fresher, less dry meat. If it's busy, assume you chances of "grilled" dry beef or chicken...
Read moreI was "greeted" by a person who looked a cross between bored and irritated that I was there, who was leaning kind of back and had their foot proped up on something under the counter with, " can I help you" said fast but slurred and with no real interest in helping me. I gave my order after a 2 second perusal of the menu that had more prices crossed out and marked over than original printing. Fortunately I was expecting to spend about $40 and she didn't disappoint. Whatever I said was taken to mean I was ordering the most expensive item I could possibly order. That is not a communication barrier, it is abuse of a customer. I also ordered "extra" teriyaki sauce for which I was charged. My order was ready too fast for them to have cooked it then. Which is the reason the chicken was dry. The pork was fatty enough to have the resemblance of moisture. Our meals were served dry. Rice and meat. I was glad I had ordered "extra" sauce. Cabbage grated in a little pile on the side. At best the cabbage had some salt water dressing. The $22 combo my husband had seemed to have about as much meat as my chicken teraki that was $13.50. As the combo was almost double in price we had hoped that the meal would reflect that. My money doesn't grow on trees and it's a real treat for us to eat out. So I will find a place that is honest, has a pleasant staff and cooks their meals when they...
Read moreI have been eating here since the 1990s and it is my absolute favorite teriyaki restaurant on this planet.
The owner is still the same, as are the recipes.
I cannot recommend the pork teriyaki enough. There is something about that particular recipe that has kept me coming back for most of my life.
The pork is succulent, with a sweet tangy sauce that he ladles on from a home-brewed batch of yum that he keeps on the stove, always hot, always delicious.
This particular fare has become extremely popular over the last few years, with people traveling as far as Auburn for that pork, chicken, and beef.
During peak hours, the owner recommends calling ahead, and if he doesn't have your select choice hot and ready, he will make it specially for you.
This place has the rare old-school service mentality, and in my mind is just as much a Seattle icon as Dick's Drive-In or Pagliacci Pizza.
Upon departing, you may be greeted with the owners signature "See You Tomorrow!"
Don't miss out on this hidden gem if you love Teriyaki, Yasuko's is a taste that can not be matched anywhere on Earth. The Pork...
