I want to make it clear that the service here is exemplary. I have never had a complaint from my family about anybody that works there. (Same goes for the old crew that worked there before new owner... The service here is consistently fantastic.)
And the atmosphere is also really nice, very welcoming, charming, comfortable. It's got that cozy tavern/ pub feel at the bar. The rest of the place is very clean and the temperature is usually very comfortable in there (and on nice spring or fall days it's great when they open the big garage door... And there is outside dining in the back as well) and they have some really amazing historical art all over the walls. If you go when it's not busy, I would encourage you to take a look around at everything they have on display, most of it directly related to the history of Shamokin and this area. What a wonderful thing to preserve all that and share it with customers the way they do.
When the owner is there, he takes the time to talk to his customers and he's very amicable and accommodating.
Now here's my complaint and the reason I don't go anymore... When this new owner took over, he changed the menu. And I know it's common for new management to do this in restaurants and I was ok with trying all the new stuff. I am mostly vegetarian but I do eat seafood, so it's easy to work with my dietary limits. Their salmon is VERY good.
The problem is, they took away one of the most popular menu items and so far it looks like they have no intentions of bringing it back -
the HARVEST BOWLS.
Literally the very reason I went back to Heritage over and over and over, even getting takeout many times, was to get the harvest bowl with salmon, asparagus, and Brussels sprouts. It was such an original plate with an absolutely amazing flavor. You don't see it anywhere else around here. It was fantastic for a vegetarian option too, because of course you could omit the meat part but still have an amazing amount of delicious food, if you are a vegetarian that doesn't eat seafood.
I've asked everytime I've been in there if/ when the harvest bowls will be back on the menu, and I'm told everytime it's gone and won't be coming back... therefore, I myself am not coming back. It's a huge disappointment, especially for my family, because my sons & husband love it there as well.
They also took away the mac & cheese dish, which was a popular choice before, and another great vegetarian option if you eat dairy.
While it is still a very nice spot to stop for a drink and/ or appetizer, and I would of course go for that, we won't be coming in anymore for full meals. The only remedy for us is if they brought the harvest bowls back or if they offered a lot more vegetarian options that are loaded with asparagus and Brussels sprouts that taste even more incredible than the harvest bowls were. So far I haven't seen anything that would indicate that's going to happen so I'm not holding my breath. Just super sad to know that I'll never have another delicious harvest bowl again.
In summary, if you are a meat eater you will definitely find delicious options here. But if your friends or partner are vegetarian, not so much. You most certainly will not be disappointed with the service regardless.
One more note that's important to be aware of - make sure you put money in the meter if you go for lunch. The town does indeed ticket those who don't...
Read moreOur party of 4 adults and 2 late teens ate here two evenings in June 2024, and we are already planning to return when we're in the area again next year. The restaurant sits on a pretty corner in downtown Shamokin, and there was plenty of parking on both evenings.
The menu contains a lot of choices, and everything sounds good, so it was hard to make a decision. As it turned out, there seemed to be no bad choices here.
Between the 6 of us, we had steak, scallops, gnocchi, 2 different kinds of chicken sandwiches, salad, the seafood platter, and burgers, and an order of their special "Duck Fat Fries," which were very good.
Everything was cooked to perfection, served hot, seasoned perfectly, and delicious. My husband and I once owned beef cattle, so it takes a great cut of meat to satisfy us steak snobs. The Heritage's steak passed with flying colors.
The duck fat fries were addictive, and I seldom eat fries at all. I couldn't stop picking at the plate we ordered for our table, and likely took more than my fair share. The scallops were tender and flavorful and served with pasta in a nice sauce that wasn't overly rich, but there was so much that I simply couldn't finish it (it probably didn't help that I had too many of those fries). My husband said the potato skins were very good, too, and comments were also made about the great flavor of the chicken sandwiches and the delicious homemade breaded mac and cheese that our teens ordered both days because it was so good (* these teens aren't typical junk food teens. Both cook and also have discerning tastes).
I also really enjoyed the flavors of the gnocchi dish, and the portions of this entree were much more manageable. I ate every last bite and then used some fries to sop up what was left of the delicious sauce.
The teens enjoyed the authentic root beer and cream soda, and my husband loved the local Crisp Lager. I tried a sip of it, and it was very clean, light, and crisp - great on a hot day and/or if you're very thirsty.
We ate late both evenings, so we didn't get to sample any of the desserts, but I wouldn't hesitate to try anything made by the Heritage's skilled chefs.
The atmosphere is relatively calm and quiet, and the decor is nicely on trend with a lot of exposed metal, but the chairs and tables are quite comfortable. The restrooms were clean and also nicely decorated in the same industrial theme. Pleasant, easy-listening 70s music played softly in the background, making it easy to talk/hear without the need to raise one's voice.
The prices were outstandingly fair, especially when taking the quality of the food into consideration. The bill for the 6 of us was around $135, not including tips; very reasonable. Our server was the same very pleasant and competent woman on both evenings. She memorized our orders sans notepad, and our items arrived perfectly as ordered. She was attentive without hovering and often offered refills before we had to ask.
If you're in the Elysburg/Shamokin/Danville area, I highly recommend stopping in at The Heritage Restaurant for a delicious meal in a...
Read moreNever would I have thought I’d share an experience like this. Had been wanting to try some of the food from here for months. Finally, decided to order their Duck Fat Fries I’ve heard so much about. The moment I walked in there, the occupied tables became silent followed by long stare The waitress asked “can I help you?” I replied “Is the restaurant closed to a private party?” The waitress then told me no and became SUPER SWEET once I mentioned I wanted my order to go. She took my order and I showed her my ID. But it didn’t stop the bartender (older woman) from glaring as if I had done something wrong. I had also ordered The Bee Sting. I noticed after my order was entered into the computer, the bartender asked the waitress about the order. The bartender began making my drink, and had taken the shaker and placed it over her mouth and spit in it. At first I thought she was smelling it for some reason but then when I saw her starting to put the ingredients to my drink in there, I decided I was not going to drink it. I notified the waitress and she assured me that’s not what happened because that was her mother in-law and tried to reassure me. I told the waitress “I’ll still pay for the drink but I’m 150% sure I’m not going to drink it.” And yes, I still tipped. I’m not sure if it was the fact I was in office attire, my skin color or what, but it was the most uncomfortable I have ever felt. I’ve never seen any diverse individuals go in there but I have it the benefit of the doubt. Will I go back and give it another chance? I think so. Maybe it was just an off day for everyone. But it’ll be some time before I...
