Most everyone has heard of the phrase, "The customer is always right". But Eb Flo Coffeehouse has the EXACT opposite approach to customer services. Sheboygan is a lovely town with warm people, and an interesting range of businesses with high quality products and services. Eb Flo Coffeehouse stands out as an ugly stain in this otherwise great destination for locals and tourists like.
On Saturday June 8, I asked for a cup of their regular cappuccino but with less milk. The listed price was $5 but I ended up being charged well over $8. I should've asked questions when I paid, but didn't. When I got my coffee, it's way too much milk. I don't mind paying a lot if the product was worth it. But not getting what I asked for AND getting over charged wasn't something I could accept. So I raised the issue with the register, who agreed that it didn't make sense. After asking her manager, she said the charge still stood because I got a 12 oz paper cup instead of a 16 oz ceramic cup, and a 12 oz only came with one shot of espresso. And because I asked for one additional espresso, I had to pay the up charge.
Does it make any sense? A customer asked for less of one of the main ingredients and had to pay more?!
A regular cup of cappuccino comes with 2 shots of espresso and is served in a 16 oz cup. But because I asked for less milk, I had to get my drink in a 12 oz cup, but this version only comes with 1 shot of espresso, so if I want 2 shots I had to pay more?!
Worse, one manager proceed to lecture me about the need to be very specific with how much less milk exactly mean. She repeatedly explained their business practice and pricing policy. “And that's just what it is,” was her refrain. She went on to instruct me that next time I should’ve ask for a Cortado, not a cappuccino. She even questioned me, "Did you already drink your coffee?" She said nothing about how her team member mis-understood the order, didn’t acknowledge how it could have created negative feelings with me. No. All she cared was to prove her point. Even as she increasingly got irritated with the situation, she asked another teammate to redo the order (that person still got it wrong btw), she continued to lecture me.
It’s not about money, it’s about being taken for a ride and being belittled. I stood my ground and asked her why, if she wanted to resolve the situation, she continued to lecture me. She finally walked away. Someone else showed up and told me she’d refund everything but retained her right to refuse services.
In the previously evening, I had dinner at another restaurant in Sheboygan. One entree was a little bit delayed and the wait staff removed the entire charge of that entree — completely unprompted. I was so impressed with the initiative that I added the entire charge of that dish on top of his regular tip. Many other businesses in town have similar high caliber customer services. Why is Eb Flo Coffee House lagging so behind? My order was a simple mis-understanding that could’ve been deescalated and rectified. But instead, its management put everything squarely on the customer and ultimately evaded their own responsibility. I know it’s not right but whenever I think about this town, I’m reminded of the sting of...
Read moreI’ve been here a few times- coffee is always good. I Came here with my mom on an early Saturday morning. Ordered a latte, black coffee, “steel cut oatmeal” and a bagel. Took 15 min to get the black coffee, 20 min to get the latte and another 15 for our food. It was busy but not overly busy-plenty of free tables. Nothing to justify the wait time for a simple order like that. I did, however, see a lot of door dash orders going out-I suspect they are severely understaffed to take on take out orders. When I did finally get my “steel cut oatmeal” it was lukewarm and under cooked. The lady remade it in under 10 minutes (steel cut takes a lot longer to cook than this) and again it was luke warm and undercooked…it was more like watery instant oatmeal and definitely not steel cut. I did not eat it and waited for my mom to finish her meal since she was almost finished at this point. When I asked for a refund on the oatmeal they said they don’t do that because of their computer system-ok I can understand the hassle that creates for a small business. But They wouldn’t even give me a gift card. Nothing. And on top of that argued with me that it was plenty hot cuz they use boiling hot water on it (thus verifying that this is indeed not steel cut oatmeal). I don’t mind paying $8 for a good hearty bowl of steel cut oats….but not this lukewarm instant raw oatmeal. I understand things happen in a restaurant business…but to treat an unsatisfied customer as a liar and let them walk out the door unhappy with your service and without a resolution is not good business practice. They need to have better organization if they want to open up their business to door dash and to reword their menu to reflect what you really get. Coffee is good, service and food is...
Read moreEven and Flo was suggested to us. We had no idea what to expect. We were greeted immediately by Sara. She was welcoming, friendly and helpful. They were busy but Sara took the time to explain their unique menu. She was wonderful. My wife got a savory croffle. Tasty and unique. I had delicious tomato basil soup. We purchased a cookie and cherry cheesecake muffin to go. That muffin was something else! The cookie was good but terribly overpriced. The star of the visit were the Refreshers we ordered. So satisfying. We wanted something different to drink. These were great. Mine was blueberry/lavender and hers was mango and something else. I will be getting another one of these soon. The atmosphere was very nice and lovely outdoor seating was available too. We wanted all their light fixtures. The other staff members were wonderful too. Fun visit. I really liked this place and will return but to me it is a light snack or treat place. If I wanted a meal I would go elsewhere. I gave five stars on all the sub categories but a four overall. Great place but a little pricey. For our two drinks, a snack, and sweet treat to go it was over forty dollars. Don’t mind that, but not everyday. I am sure being on the pier and next to a resort makes their overhead high. Great place to visit with such...
