My family (2 parents, 2 college-aged children) dined at Gogi on a Tuesday in early January and had a mixed experience.
First off, it's important to understand how this atypical restaurant operates. Each 4-person table has a small grill in the middle. The servers bring out an array of 7 different kimchis (unlimited refills of kimchi), a bowl of steamed rice, and a plate of uncooked marinaded meat and onion slices along with tongs and shears. The diner is responsible for cutting up the meat and onion, placing it on the grill and cooking it as desired. It reminded me of a Japanese Steakhouse, except YOU do the work of the grill chef.
THE GOOD: The kimchis were the best I've had since moving to Sierra Vista 3 year ago. All 4 of us loved the beef bulgogi and fried dumplings (mandu). Food portions were very generous. Wait staff was attentive.
THE NOT SO GOOD: Limited menu. Our menu choices were Beef Bulgogi or Chicken Bulgogi or pork belly. While the Beef Bulgogi was excellent, all 4 of us thought the Chicken Bulgogi was just okay. We did not try the pork option. Out of stock items. Only 2 of the 5 wines on the menu were in stock. The Beef Ribs on the menu also were out of stock. I consider this forgivable since Gogi is a new restaurant and it takes time to work out coordination with suppliers. Skimpy serving of wine. Cost of a glass of wine was $13 for about 4 ounces. The $6 beer was a better value, though not by much. I understand marking up price of drinks to support business profits, but Gogi takes the concept too far in my opinion. Table layout for 4 people. We had 7 different very small bowls of kimchi, 4 on one side of the table and 3 on the other side. If you wanted to try a taste of kimchi across the table, you had to reach across the hot grill with your chopsticks or fork. Or spend the whole night passing kimchis around. This is not a problem with just two diners - everything is on one side of the table. But with FOUR diners, wait staff should put 7 bowls on each side of the table so diners don't have to reach across the hot grill. My daughter asked for a new wine glass and a new plate because neither looked properly cleaned and dried. The replacement glass and plate were fine. Overall value. After tip, we spent about $180 for 4 people. Given the other "not so good" comments, I therefore consider Gogi only a "fair" value. Food quality was simply outstanding; otherwise value would be "poor".
FINAL THOUGHT: For me personally, one of the main purposes of dining out is having someone ELSE do the cooking! Being brought the food and having to cook it myself defeats that purpose. I would LOVE to return to Gogi, but only if one of the restaurant chefs cooked the food instead of me having to do it (even as take-out). I hope Gogi owners will consider adding...
Read moreWhen you first walk in, definitely not an authentic KBBQ experience. There are no hood vents over the grill, which makes the rest of the room smokey. Looking at the menu, the prices are ridiculous. One plate of me is $25 each. We got the flight of three with pork belly, beef bulgogi and shrimp for $35. Both the pork belly and shrimp were frozen when arriving at the table, and the pork belly was really just bacon and a lot of fat in the cut. The amount of meat you get is laughable. Beef bulgogi barely had flavor even though it came marinaded, and all they had for "dipping" sauce was soy sauce, Sriracha, and salt and pepper. Their pork belly and shrimp didn't even have any marinade even though online it says pork belly bulgogi. Having been to numerous authentic KBBQs and being Asian myself, this place is not worth the visit. Everyone giving this place 3-5 stars just doesn't know what authentic Korean food is. Giving service a 2 because they don't really do much except bringing your drinks and plate of meats. Save yourself the time and money and go to an ALL YOU CAN EAT KBBQ...
Read moreToday, I had the pleasure of sampling the upcoming lunch special at Gogi BBQ House, a Korean restaurant that's been known primarily for its dinner service. Until now, they hadn't offered a lunch menu, which was a bit of a letdown for midday visitors like me. But after trying their new dishes today, I have to sayâit was absolutely worth the wait.
The flavors were spot on. The meat was expertly seasoned and arrived sizzling on a hot plate, which kept it perfectly warm from the first bite to the last. The vegetables were cooked to perfection, with just the right amount of crunch, and the assortment of Korean side dishes added an authentic and delightful touch to the meal. It felt like a complete and satisfying dining experience.
Iâm confident this place will become a new go-to lunch spot for anyone craving delicious Korean BBQ, and not just for dinner anymore. I canât wait for their official lunch menu launchâitâs definitely going to be a hit. If youâre looking for a fresh and flavorful lunch experience, Gogi BBQ House should be at the top...
