To sum up in one line: good, not great. Read on if you want the somewhat long-winded details.
Driving home to Tucson after a long road trip, I decided to stop by Silver City for some New Mexican food. The primary variety of Mexican cuisine in southern Arizona is Sonoran, and the one New Mexican restaurant near my home closed a while ago. So, I really wanted some great red and green chiles.
Upon entering the restaurant I was greeted quickly and politely. After a brief wait I was seated and my server promptly arrived and offered a drink. When she returned to take my order, I requested the beef enchiladas Christmas style, shorthand for the popular combination of both red and green sauces. Her response surprised me; “They won’t do that,” she said. “They don’t like the way it looks.” I found that quite bizarre, but begrudgingly ordered the plate with red (reportedly spicier) and added a side of the green. She also offered the usual chips and salsa which, despite being listed for purchase on the menu, were included with the meal at no added charge.
The chips, freshly made, were very good. This may seem trivial, but I’ve had some really lousy chips over the years. The salsa was a bit bland and watery for my taste. The main event, the enchilada plate, was just a bit disappointing. I found the red chile rather bland, lacking both the complexity of flavor and the heat that a mature red sauce should offer. The green was actually more flavorful but entirely burn-free. The rice and beans were fine.
In the end, I left a bit dispirited. The place has charm, and the service was very good. But the food should be the star of the show and, sadly, fell short of my expectations given all the...

One of the standout dishes at Jalisco Cafe is the tacos with roasted shell. The tacos are made with fresh, handmade tortillas that are roasted to perfection, giving them a slightly crispy texture and a smoky flavor. The tacos are then filled with your choice of meat, including carne asada, carnitas, al pastor, and barbacoa.
I had the carne asada tacos with roasted shell, and they were absolutely delicious. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the roasted shell added a unique and delightful crunch. The tacos were also topped with a generous amount of fresh salsa, guacamole, and sour cream, which added a nice balance of flavors.
In addition to the tacos, Jalisco Cafe also serves a variety of other traditional Mexican dishes, including enchiladas, burritos, and tortas. They also have a great selection of margaritas and other Mexican beers to choose from.
The atmosphere at Jalisco Cafe is casual and relaxed. The feel of the place from the turn of the century transom windowed door to tastefully decorated with colorful Mexican artwork and music, and the owner and staff is friendly and attentive give the place both a welcoming familiar and calming type of feeling not found in too many restaurants.
Overall, Jalisco Cafe is a great place to enjoy authentic Mexican food in Silver City. The tacos with roasted shell are a must-try, and the rest of the menu is sure to...
Read moreVery good service from staff! I had a meal here a few years ago. Today I had the three taco plate. Refried beans were OK. Spanish rice was very good with bits of carrots, red&green peppers, texture is good. Tacos: chicken-savory taste and tender meat. Loaded with iceberg lettuce, some cheese, & a tomato slice. (Not generous with the amount of any of the meats, but understandable considering the skyrocket prices since COVID-19 & the unscrupulous suppliers gouging their customers.) ☆ Overall the best taste and texture of the three. Taco: beef-ground beef, tasteless. Taco: pork-real & chopped better taste than the beef. Meat was a bit chewy. Chips and salsa usually an appetizer gratis, menus cost was $3.50 Jalisco Cafe? Not really. Four plus years in Guadalajara with many opportunities to enjoy Jalisco cuisine, the only Jalisco I found was the typical decorations from Mexico, the cafe name, recorded music and maybe somewhere in the past an owner or chef may have had roots there, but the meal I had was a poor representation of that Jalisco. I am jaded for sure My review is harsh and I miss my friends in Mexico. Street tacos of Jalisco was my hope. Aroma from the garnish of cilantro & onion and a squeeze of limon is the only appetizer needed. The food assembled in front of one while ordering allowed customers a totally open view of prep and assembly. But Americans want everything Amaricanized either from a lack of taste or imposed FDA regulation. I have no desire to return to Jalisco Cafe. I have...
