This place is a gem, German food is a real treat. I lived in Bavaria when I was younger, and Bronwyn brought back a lot of nostalgia. My girlfriend and I started off the meal in this authentically decorated German restaurant with a pomegranate and shrub drink, we don't drink alcohol but we saw they had a very tempting selection. The drink was great with a wide range of flavors from lime to pomegranate. As an appetizer we got the Langos, which I had never had before. The dough was delicious and crunchy contrasting with the soft rich mushrooms and the cream had a nice touch of fresh dill. For the main course we split the Spätzle and the Schnitzel. It came out in a timely manner and we never felt like we had to wait as the restaurant was such a marvel. The Schnitzel was one of the best Schnitzels I've had, it was a little bit thicker than the Schnitzel I had back in Germany which allowed it to be so tender and crunchy, the lemon complimented the sauce and the Schnitzel perfectly, and the potato salad with chunks of pork belly is something I'd highly recommend as an addition to your meal. Spätzle is probably my favorite dish of all time so I may be biased but I thought it was so worth the hour drive we took to get there. The noodles had a perfect bite to them and the cheese was not too overbearing, the spinach and onions gave the dish its depth. Now my only complaint if ever so slight was I thought the sausage that we ordered with the spätzle was not the best pairing with it. It was a fine sausage on its own, but I think it would have gone better with their horseradish mustard or their jalapeno aioli. We still enjoyed it in contrast to the meal but I probably would opt for a different pairing. Finally we finished off the meal with their Apfelstrüdel. What a nice end to the meal, it surprised us by having a mild sweetness the apple and raisins carried the sweetness while the pastry and the freshly made whipped cream balanced out the flavor with chewiness and creaminess. We left the restaurant bellies full with enough leftovers for a full meal. The price was moderate and our service was incredible. Our server was very attentive, accommodating, and always available within a few minutes. Throughout the restaurant there were people of all cultures including German, and it was a really nice modern authentic experience. I would recommend this...
Read moreWe visited BRONWYN (I have no idea why they capitalize their whole name.) Friday because October calls for German food. I love German food and there aren’t a lot of German restaurants around. I’ve been there before, but this was a wonderful visit. We started with the pretzel, big soft and covered with course salt. It comes with a very nice horseradish mustard, spicy but not overwhelming. For an up charge you can also get beer cheese, but I greatly prefer the mustard.
They were celebrating Oktoberfest, but I’m not much of a beer drinker, so I started with a cocktail. They have a variation on a Negroni called Czech Yourself, made with Czech fernet, gin, and Campari. Although I’m mostly Irish-German, I do have some Czech ancestry and as you well know I’m a gin guy, so I had to try it. Very nice, I actually preferred it it to the traditional Negroni. After that I had a couple glasses of Austrian Grüner Veltliner. I’m not Austrian.
For dinner we split the Spätzle and the Schnitzel. The spätzle is larger than I’m used to but nicely browned and served with spinach and onions. You can add a sausage to it if you like. We added a bratwurst. This dish is delicious but huge. I took some home, and it heats up nicely in a frying pan the next day.The schnitzel was also excellent. It is topped with a mushroom cream sauce and served with warm, bacony potato salad. I would get both of these dishes again with no hesitation. I’d even get the spätzle to go because it reheats so well.
For dessert, we had the Apflestrudel, apples and golden raisins stuffed into a pastry and topped with buttermilk whipped cream. With it, I had a shot of Jäegermeister, which I didn’t shoot, I sipped.
The staff was dressed in traditional German attire and the small space was decorated for Oktoberfest. There aren’t many seats and it’s crowded, but definitely charming. The service was very friendly and the atmosphere was casual. It was a relaxing feast. Union Square is about the worst place to park, but once you find a spot everything is great! I’m excited to go back to try the sauerbraten and of course more of their...
Read moreI was looking forward to going to this place. We had the Octoberfest menu. We came for late lunch. Overall, a so-so experience. No complaints on the drink menu. The food experience was mixed. What I appreciated were the house made sausages which were comparatively lean. Having 5 varieties, the sausages appeared to be rather similar to each other in taste after a while. Some more differentiating seasoning might help. The pretzel was better than average restaurant pretzel. The only thing what was very below average was the cheese sauce dip that came with the pretzel. Wow. Really bad. For a German inspired menu, I would expect butter rather than a cheese dip that is really bad. We had also the curry sausage. So this is certainly not your average Frankfurt Airport curry sausage. The sausage I believe is flavored with curry (does not have a punch, slightly yellow) and comes with a curry ketchup. It was ok. Combining the curry sausage with sauerkraut and potato salad though was a strange mix from my point of view. A very filling dish. We also had the Spatzle. I am not sure what happened here. The “Spatzle” certainly did not look like Spatzle. Also the supposedly pasta like dish had a sweet aftertaste what might indicate that there was milk in the batter. Just guessing. The Spatzle were huge and nothing like what I had in the past. Coming in for late lunch, the Spatzle certainly were only reheated and came pretty drenched in fat and were soggy. A very heavy dish. With each dish, potato salad and sauerkraut was served. I believe calling the potato salad a "salad" is somewhat a stretch. It is served warm. It had bacon and did not have a lot of texture. From looking at it, I could not tell that I was looking at a potato salad. The potato salad was very heavy as well. The sauerkraut was also very disappointing: Very blend, too salty, too soggy. No more bite. I hope if everything is back to normal, the food will be fresher, more vibrant and made too order. We spent quite a bit there for lunch though left rather disappointed and I certainly will skip...
