Mt Vernon has a severely gone downhill. Myself, parents and grandparents had always associated Mount Vernon with one of the best restaurants in the area. A hidden gem which has been around for 84 yrs or so. With their famous baked stuffed lobster it was the place to go. No longer do they live up to the reputation from their hayday. First they discontinued their breakfast buffett on Sundays once the pandemic hit, like most places in the area, buffetts are a thing of the past. Understandable why it began, not sure why to keep it up at this point. 🤔 Upon entering you feel as if you've time traveled back to some late 80s dive bar. The smell of stale beer, dirty everything, outdated booths, tables, bar and extremely bad/old decor all make you want to run away. Looking at the menu is almost as shocking because their prices are inline more with a much finer eating establishment. They really have no place at all asking these prices. The waitstaff and bar-keep seem tired and could care less about the patrons.
The food was horrible. I cannot stress enough how bad everything we ordered was. My roastbeef (i only ordered this because it was obvious how poorly the dishes looked plus the price, it was the cheapest entree) came in 4 different colors, was laiden with fat running through it and seriously scared me, so it didn't get eaten. Let's not forget the peas, with only a choice of squash or peas I opted for the itty bitty bit more desirable of the two poor choices. CANNED PEAS! Not even frozen so they'd have some snap to them..nope, canned. My one scoop of dry tasteless mashed potatoes was the only thing that got a second bite on my plate. The waitress never acknowledged that I hadn't eaten anything, if anything she should have asked if there was a concern and tried to straighten it out. Absolute garbage. No salad with your meal either.
Ordered a $10 margarita that came in a beer glass, which due to the tables instability fell over while full. Trying to find our waitress was a chore in and of itself and we never did find her to help clean but who we belive was the manager came over and handed me an old rag to clean it up. Yup! I had to clean an entire 12oz sticky drink with one smelly rag. They never even replaced my drink. They made sure to charge me for it though!! I even made sure to mention why the drink had tipped once we did see our server and she shrugged it off. I hate writing poor reviews, but I do feel an obligation to share our experiences when we go out. Mount Vernon needs to clean this place up, refresh the menu and their ideas of what should be offered.. maybe a new chef to bring some life to the plates, pep talk the waitresses and bar keep, CLEAN things and make some updates in the decor. Doing these things could lead to more clientele. It seemed everyone in the place was over 50 yrs old, meaning they're missing out on a huge market base of customers. The reasons are all stated above. They need to address these issues for the longevity of this place by appealing to a whole new generation of "foodies". Clean up your act and advertise when you get it done. I would not advise going here at this point. We left hungry...
Read moreWent to this place to grab early dinner with my sister. Bar area was quite crowded and my sister was not really comfortable with how crowded it was. We considered leaving but found there was a whole other dining room in the back that was completely empty. They brought some delicious looking roles fresh from the oven to the table while looking over the menu. Steam still coming off of them and crispy brown perfection outside, we tried the rolls. Unfortunately they were still very doey inside and not completely cooked, so much so that we couldn't really eat them. They have a great menu with lots of fish and things like roast beef dinner, shepherds pie(lamb and beef mix), and chicken pie. I just got a cheeseburger and fries which was good. My sister got the lobster casserole. She said the lobster didn't taste fresh or right and didn't like the peppers in it with the lobster taste together. She ate very little of it and was disappointed, but didn't want to say anything. When the waitress noticed she didn't eat much and asked, she admitted she didn't really like it at all. Without asking the waitress immediately took the meal off the bill and asked if she would like something else, which she didn't. Meals seemed fairly reasonably priced. Burger and fries was $10. Can't remember what lobster was. Market price. We did order a piece of chocolate layer cake for dessert which was served with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. It was good, but was $9 which we thought was quite overpriced for sure. The waitress was wonderful and there was quite a crowd for the time of day, so I might be tempted to go back and try a different dish. I try to remember that some things are harder to get fresh right now with covid and it is the dead of winter, so maybe that's why lobster wasn't fresh. Worth a try if you're in the neighborhood. Large list of beer to choose from and a casual pub atmosphere with lots of booths in bar area and back dining room. Cable TV for watching games and great staff from...
Read moreThere are places you go to, and the dinner is great but they fall out of your memory not too long afterwards. There are also places where it’s easy to assume you’re going to get throwaway easily prepared processed foods. I’m happy to say that this not the case on those two things here at Mount Vernon Restaurant & Pub. We will never forget this place.
We are visiting Boston for the first time on vacation and chose Mount Vernon because it was in our AirBNB vicinity for the first night of our stay. We wanted something close after a really long day of travel to get here. We were absolutely blown away. That all begins and ends with every person we encountered treating us like they’ve known us forever in the neighborhood. What more could you ask for? We will never forget that. EVER!
But you go to restaurants to eat, and that’s what truly makes this place so special. The team doing the cooking in that kitchen are all chef level cooks doing some rather amazing dishes. We were floored by the quality, the presentation, and most importantly … The taste. I will add that we’ve had popovers before, but have never had any as delicious and perfect as these. They give you these massive things as part of your meal!!! Let me add … Those popovers should win awards.
The waitperson did an incredible job and was just like everyone else at making us feel welcome and part of the neighborhood family. If you are looking for a place to have a great experience, with great people, and some remarkable food. This place is a must! As for us … We will carry this place with us forever, and it will become part of our memory of this amazing trip.
What a wonderful surprise and we wish it was in our neighborhood back home. We’d be there a few times weekly if that...
