Went to A Fuego, a Puerto Rican restaurant that serves criolle cooking (known as criolla), not creole (which is a French style Cajun cuisine). Very rare to see a Puerto Rican restaurant in South Carolina.
Once you step into the restaurant, you are warmly greeted by the owner Jessica and various staff that bring your vibe up to feel like one of the family as you're being seated. The restaurant atmosphere is positive and down to earth. Another rarity to find in an eatery establishment.
Started with sorullo, known on the menu as sorullitos which are Puerto Rican style corn fritters also known as corn stick. I requested it be done crispy, since I know some like the crust a bit on the soft side and some like myself, the crust on the crispy side. It tasted real good.
Ordered land and sea dish, known as tierra y mar. It is Criolla style steak and shrimps, also tasted very authentic and delicious. The sweet plantains (platano maduro) were spot on delicious and perfectly cooked. Dish came with 2 sauces, chimichurri and mayo-ketchup.
As a side, I ordered cheese balls. It's basically a yuca (mandioc) fritter with cheese filling. I never had it with cheese, always with a meat filling known as relleno de yuca. This tasted amazingly delicious and quickly noticed the hint of mojo that is a garlic-oil infused Puerto Rican condiment that made me fall in love with these yuca balls. Damn, that was good!!!
For dessert, ordered a flan with the caramel sauce tasted divinely.
I drank fruit punch with my meal, but my guests ordered non-alcohol mango shake that is made with no milk, and other guest had a strawberry shake, also had no milk. Gave it a taste test to try it out. Both tasted delicious and tropical.
Overall, I am impressed with this restaurant, it's awesome servers, cleaniless and the delicious fresh tasting food that was 100% authentic and true Puerto Rican cuisine.
One important thing to add, this restaurant was spotless, well organize, had ample room and privacy for customers to eat. The music playing in the background can be heard through the restaurant, that was at a comfortable low level and audibly nice.
If you ever near Columbia, South Carolina, take that trip few miles north to the town of Irmo and visit this restaurant and expect to be nicely greeted by the owner Jessica and her kind staff. Definitely, one of my highly recommended place that I will...

Read moreThis place has a great vibe that is dictated by awesome service. So we were driving through the state on an epic road trip and decided to stop here. My initial look at the menu made me concerned that I wasn’t going to be able to get anything vegan. I figured I’d just ask. So I tried the line that I’m not a big fan of meat and dairy. The initial server was a little perplexed so she called in reinforcements. Another staff member came out and I again explained my desires. She was on it. Despite my vague request she figured out that I was vegan and also wouldn’t want eggs. She recommended several very good courses. At one point she called another staff member and the three of them were problem solving the best recommendations for me. Ok, it was 4:30 on a Thursday but I was very impressed with the effort. Interestingly, the facility has 10 tables for sit down service, but I had the feeling they were mainly a place for takeout. Our food was served to the table in takeout containers (see pictures). The food was great. Nice music playing. Really cool place. I’d definitely go back if I wasn’t from out of state. Several notes. When we ordered water it came out in plastic water bottles. Utensils were all plastic and I mentioned the service in takeout containers. I don’t have a problem with this (other than the environmental aspect), but go in knowing this and just appreciate the high quality authentic food. The other person in my party really enjoyed his steak and shrimp dish.
Remember, every time you ask for plant based food when you don’t see it on the menu, the more likely that they’ll have it on the menu...
